    Angry Need Long Ide!!!

I finally got this blasted slimline IDE DVD player working 100%, but now I need a longer IDE ribbon/cable to get the DVD player from my trunk ("boot" as some of you call it) to the front dash. The run is just under 15 feet.

    ANY IDEAS?

I would prefer not to do some kind of USB -> IDE enclosure or firewire -> IDE enclosure.

I've heard of people using shielded CAT-5 to run the wires over longer distances.. I would need 5 of those (x 8 wires each = 40 pin)...

    Thanks in advance!

Yeah, but then you have to power it separately.. It's a total PITA, cuz then you have power to the USB converter and power to the DVD drive still..

    Too many wires I think..

Oh man, no way.. I don't think that will work.. 15feet???

Doesn't it need to be shielded and grounded or something?

I didnt think the cat5 would work either though....did the other post ever come to any conclusion as to what the max length of either of them are? I thought I read that the 80 pin was not the greatest, because the wires are so small, but the 40 pin stuff was decent. As far as shielding though, not really sure. I would be very hesitant to run anything but usb or firewire that far myself, but I know what your saying on the running 5v to it as well. I am sure there are usb devices out there that draw all their power from the usb port, but this would be bad as well, over this distance anyway. There has to be a better answer.

I would say its VERY unlikely an IDE cable is going to work at 15ft long, reguardless of the shielding. The maximum size according to the spec is 24". There are also signal timing isssues to take into account, not just interference. The one thing you could try though, is (assuming this is possible BIOS), clocking the bus down to ATA33. This isn't going to be a big deal for a CD drive anyways, and would give the bus a better chance at working.

Do some more searching. I saw a thread on this board of a guy that had an ide cable of about 15, and it worked fine. Even had a picture, he had it going accross his living room.

OK, I found the guy Leslie33737 or something..

He is using an 80pin IDE cable...

What is so special about the 80pin? My Motherboard only accepts 40pin, so what do the other 40 pins hook up to?? How do I wire this?

    Thanks!

The thing is, this guy paid like $40 shipped for a long IDE ribbon..

I just want to make my own. I can get the 80-pin IDE roll (50') from Fry's or something and make my own..

I just don't know how you wire it to a 40-pin connector.. ANY IDEAS???

    Thanks!
