IDE to USB 2.0

Hey, I have already searched and googled for this but I was wondering where everyone got their IDe to USB 2.0 adapters and how much they were, I have found a few but they were all like $40. I found this one on e-bay here but under the description it lists that it needs a power supply and I was wondering if all fo the adapters like this needed them even if I was going to be powering the device itself seperately. If not please let me know I am gettign so much closer to finishing my project.

I don't think any of the adapters themselves need a PS.

They usually come with a power supply for a HD or CD drive. If you are powering the drive with an Opus (or whatever), you won't need the PS that comes with the IDE-USB adapter.

So how do these work? I have an Pioneer slot load IDE drive. If I hook it up using this adapter, will it be recognized as an IDE drive or USB drive?

It will be a USB drive, because it connects to your USB port on your PC.

can USB devices then be bootable? or does that depend on the mobo and bios? I have a similar setup and would like to avoid putting another CD drive in my case as well as in the dash

Yes they can be bootable, but it does depend on the motherboard and BIOS supporting boot from USB.

Also many of the 2.5" USB Drive enclosures don't require a power supply at all and run directly off of USB, they however, require a high amount of power from the USB connection and so may not always work just off USB if you have a lot USB devices or connect them to a HUB rather then directly to the PC.

Ok, so if I am runing a molex power connector from the Opus into the slim to IDE adapter, then the ide to USB adapter will not need a power supply correct ? Basically my setup is going to be "slim cd-rom->IDE adapter->USB adapter" and the floppy molex power cable will plug into the "Slim IDE to ATAPI/IDE adapter". If you cant understand this that is ok because I kind of lost myself intyping it

but wont that be a 44 pin ide connection... how do i get that to my 40 pin ide connection on the cd player

just get an enclosure for a 3.5" or 5.25" drive they will have everything you need, because you could adapt the 44 pin to 40 pin, but you would have to be desperate, since you would still need the 12 and 5 volt power sources
