plz, if you know the answer, or a simple link will suffice. Thanks
Hi there all, I searched for over 4 hours here and couldnt find the answer to this specific problem:
I have a laptop with a cracked screen that I will be using for the carPC. I will be using an inverter with the AC power supply to the laptop. What I would like is this: When I turn off the ignition, the laptop senses that the battery isn't being charged anymore (there is a power loss), and sends the hibernate signal. The laptop would proceed to hibernate, using the laptop battery while shutting down. When I start the car, the inverter starts, sends power to the laptop... and thats when i want the computer to start back up.
I Imagine I would have to use some kind of shutdown controller for that, But I dont believe my compaq presario 1212CL has the feature to power the PC after power failure... any hardware mods that can help me with this.
And also I appologize if this question is already answered, so if someone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction (send me a link to the posts...)
If i knew the keywords or anything I would have searched... I did a search for laptop shutdown controller and nothing useful came up.
Thanks for all ur help guys (and gals)

New shutdown controller - software

maybe this will help?
Does your laptop have Wake On Ring option in the BIOS ? if yes you can enable it and applying 5 Volts to pin 9 (RI) of the 9 Pin Com Port and it should boot the PC. I have tried it on my desktop and it works fine.
About my shoutdown Controller:
I am using Fake UPS (Laidback's idea) http://www.cynian.net/index?name=car...iddle=carputer (works for 2K also ) for hibernating and Wake On Ring for Startup.
Hope this helps

Thanks Laidback
I been looking for that thread ages ago.
I did start to wonder why poeple in here start using the word "Fake UPS"...so I guess it was you who spread it around
Anyway I cant get the wake on ring to work at the time. I see it does work...which is kinda cool
A simple circuit with input protections, low battery sense, forced shutdown timer together with "weekendowel" software shutdown controller as in :
New shutdown controller - software
...then we can have a good cheap reliable shutdown controller.
If anyone interested Ill be willing to start digging up more infos and hopefull we can come up with a complete solutions.
Just alittle bit worried someone might start talking about patent from here :

Lol no...I dont intend to sell Im just trying to help out![]()
edit: For shutdown only
quick and dirty method without any hardware mods or sticking any live wires into any ports:
Set your Power options for your laptop to sleep after 1 minute (when running on battery). When you power off your car, and power to your inverter is cut, power to laptop is cut (assuming you have it tied somehow to acc. or directly to cig adapter), and laptop resumes to run on battery.. laptop then sleeps after 1 minute. Only drawback is you have to wait 1 minute for the sleep.
You can also mess with the hibernate when running on battery after the sleep..
It's not perfect, but it works...
Guys the problem is the piece if shyt laptop i got is a compaq.... the bios has like 2 options and thats it. I certainly dont have power on failure.... how do i make it start back up ???????? when the ignition is turned on.... I do understand the part how to make it shutdown after power is cut.
but still there has to be a turn-key solution to use with a laptop. Since the laptop already has a battery, when the ignition is cut, it will sence the loss of power and use the battery to shut down/hibernate. Also when power is re-applied, the laptop sences that electricity was restored, and powers on the laptop...
any ideas/suggestions/anything?
