    Post How to install GPS???

I want to install a GPS system on my mp3 computer,I have a 5.5" LCD screen and I was wondering what everyone used for GPS? Is there a hardware/software kit available to just install? Whats the average price of them and what make/model?

You can get a kit from a Delorme it costs $179.95 http://www.delorme.com/earthmate/emate_sa7pak.asp for the hardware and software package. The only problem is you probably won't be able to read street names on the GPS becuase a 5.5 LCD monitor is to small and TV out has crappy resolution. The best would be a 8.4 in LCD that takes an analog VGA input from www.flat-panel.com it costs $475. I am saving up for one now. Good Luck.

    Question

I have a question for the guys who have tried GPS. Many of you have said that it takes time to find the satellite. I am wondering if that problem comes from the hardware or from the software...

I would like to mention that last May I went to Japan; Sony sells a USB GPS for its viaos there for around $200. I have looked for it here, but it looks like it not out yet. Well its a SONY, and GPS are a lot more common than in the US in Japaneese cars; so I think that if the rpoblem comes from the hardware, I would trust Sony to make a quality product...

Has anybody seen it in the US? If I buy the Japaneese GPS, do you think I'll have some trouble using it here?

    Thanks.

A usb gps would be perfect (with all my serial ports being used up). I also heard about gps software that will talk to you and whatnot and thought that that sounded really nice as well. Anyone have any info on this?

I've had a problem with running out of serial ports for a long time now. After trying expensive USB serial converters, and failing miserably, I went to the electronics store and found a nice ISA card with 2 serial ports on it, for $30 bucks. Now I can use my remote, touchscreen, shutdown unit, and GPS.

    Hi Lifter,
would you mind sharing with us your experience with gps, like what software and gps serial device you used. What do you have to say about finding the satellite and the time it takes, how long is it exactly?

    Thanks.

Im wondering for those of you out there who have installed GPS...what kind of software do you guys use?
I have a 5.6" LCD and unless i use streets and trips 2001 because it allows me to change the fonts of the street names making it readable on the screen. I know for a fact that Streetfinder 2000 doesn't let you do those things i tried... i was wondering if anyone tried streetatlas USA and if it allows you to change the fonts.

If you guys are looking for a decent GPS receiver for under $100 go for the RandMcNally one. It's better than the Earthmate ( reviews on http://www.gpsnuts.com/myGPS/GPS/Har...cnally_gps.htm )

The tracking time for me is usually less than a minute using Microsoft streets and trips.
    Good luck to you all!

    Question

    Hi moahdib,
I saw that the power to that GPS is drawn for the keyboard port. However I thnk there are two ports from the pic I saw on <a href="http://www.randmcnally.com/store/product.ehtml?browsetype=dept&dept=B&cat1=2&cat2=& sku=0840496">randmcnally.com</a>. Is it a serial port?
    Thanks.

The data goes through the serial port and the power is drawn from a PS/2 port ( only uses the +5V and ground pins. So you just get a spare ps/2 port and splice some wires for the +5V and ps/2 and voila...
You won't even occupy your existing PS/2 port.

Well I actually don't have a GPS yet, but I just found a great deal and ordered one today (I'm posting the link in a new topic in a few minutes). My point was that I now have a free serial port for one.
