Reply With QuoteI'm thinking about resorting to down grading my BIOS to 1.0f and see if that helps at all. I have been saving this as a last resort because I hate messing with firmware because I'm afraid I'm going to turn my hardware into a door stop.
I've been having some trouble with my M10000, it refuses to boot XP. Heres a rough outline of what has happened and what I've done to trouble shoot. First off my parts:
M10000, 40 GB Toshiba HD, Slim slot-loading DVD/CDRW, 512 .8" 266DDR, DC PSU that came with my C134 Travla case
When I connected everything up for the first time and popped in my XP boot-able install cd everything started normally (loading the drivers etc) until the actual GUI installer is supposed to come up then it BSOD on me stating my BIOS was not fully ACPI compliant. I checked the web and I have the latest BIOS (1.13) so I went into the BIOS and set everything to the fail-safe settings...still BSOD. So I grabbed my Bart PE bootdisk and tried to load that up . It would get to the point right before PE should show up and it would BSOD on me again with the same error.
This is when I started to think some of my hardware maybe bad. So I pull the hard drive and hook it up to my desktop machine. Insert my XP boot cd and it installs no problem. Hmm...ok, I hook the hard drive back up to my M10000 and fire it up thinking I'm going to be home free...nope. It looks like its booting normally (showing me my system summary etc...) then the screen goes blank. The machine is still running and everything but the hd activity led is no longer blinking happily. So I have to hard boot and this time it asks me for Safe Mode, Safe Mode w/ networking etc... Well thats a good sign at least it knows it took a **** last boot. So I select Safe Mode w/ Command prompt. I watch the initialized files pass by then it stops on "Mup.sys" and strangly enough I look through the list of the drivers already loaded and ACPI.sys is up about 15 from Mup.sys.
Ok, maybe there is something screwy going on with my stick of memory I start to think so I find a copy of memtest86 and burn it to a boot-able cd and try it out. No errors what so ever. I tried unplugging both my hard drive and CD and it booted normally until the normal boot from hard disk at which point it complained about not having anything to boot from. Then I read that maybe my PSU isn't powerful enough and if its not it can cause problems. So I hook up my PSU from my desktop machine (550W) and still no changes. I've tried posting on viaarena.com and I've gotten no ideas so I thought I'd give you all a shot as well. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated

This sounds like a power or heat problem. Could a cable be obstructing the processor fan? Have you tried powering with a regular AC-DC ATX power supply?
Just to offer it, have you considered applying this modification yet? It may apply to additional boards other than the cl10000. When I bought my case and M/B, it seemed to boot about 1-2 times right. After that I began to have at least some of the issues you expressed. But since the problems that this can cause are very vague in nature, it is difficult to pinpoint this as being a valid solution to your problem.
In my case, I called the case manufacturer directly to see if this modification could help me. They confirmed with certainty that this would not be the cause of the problems I was seeing, and that they had already resolved all of these issues in the production model I owned, and the modification was not neccesary.
Eventually I ignored their advice and applied the mod anyways, as a just-in-case.

The M10000 doesn't suffer from this problem as far as I understand it.
Have you tried booting with knoppix ? It's a big download, but once you download it and burn it to a CD you might be able to troubleshoot your problems better.
Also, have you tried a different CD drive? or tried the dirve in a different computer?

Also to note this isn't currently installed in my car. I have the case (taken apart) on my desk so heat shouldn't be an issue. I checked the heat reading in the BIOS and its not too bad nor is the heat sink hot to the touch (just a little warm)
I'm 99% sure its not the cd drive because I can load up boot-able cds no problem. I was able to use
Ultimate Boot cd and run aida, Barts boot disk, and browse my hard drive. I even tried leaving my hard drive and unplugging my cdrom but I still got the same hangup on "Mup.sys". By all accounts my machine is working (if I only wanted to use DOS). I'll give Knoppix a shot when I get home from work. I tried installing Slackware 9 from a boot-able cd but it got hung-up before the install could happen.
UPDATE:
I just tried Knoppix 3.4 and it froze "Checking for for USB" (yes it says for twice). I don't have the front USB/audio/or firewire connectors plugged in so the only usb should be the two jacks in the back.
On my second try I booted Knoppix using "failsafe" and it booted fully into Knoppix. Now I have the long process of guessing which piece of integrated hardware is being a bastard.
Ok I'm officially confused...
knoppix (2.4) only works if I specify "failsafe" or "knoppix nousb" BUT if I specify the 2.6.6 kernel it works ("knoppix26"). Does anyone have any linux / Knoppix experience to know why the 2.4 kernel hangs while "Checking for for USB" and the 2.6.6 kernel rips along no problem? I'll go into my BIOS and try to copy most of my settings to this post to see if anyone can spot some problems I'm missing
