Connecting a CD/DVD player that's too far for IDE?

I'm sorry if this has been brought up before, but I couldn't find the right key words to do a search.

I haven't decided if I'll be using a CD/DVD 5 1/4" drive, or some kind of slim laptop drive. But in either case I think I will still have the same problem. I want to mount it in a location that will be to far away from the motherboard to use IDE. I'm estimating the distance to be 4 feet of cable. What are my economical options? The only thing I can come up with is a USB 2.0/IDE adaptor.

IDE cable are available at 36" (3 feet). Close, but I guess not close enough for your install. Take a look at this: HERE

This is an IDE to USB2.0 adapter. It also comes with the 2.5" (laptop/slim drive) to 3.5" adapter. The power adapter can easily be modified for run off the computer's power (+5 & +12VDC). This is really the power needed for the drive.

I'm throwing in a Lacie Slim CD-R/DVD-ROM Combo drive in my system. They're $240AU (rrp is $149US). Reads just about anything and can burn on the go. Also powered off the USB/Firewire port so no stuffing with extra cables needed.

I've also been thinking about shoving a drive in the center arm rest vertically. The issue with that is I would need a slot load drive. The only one that I know of around here is the Pioneer 16X DVD drive. I have the tray version in one of my PC's at home. I find it to be a very loud drive. It sounds like it's going to lift off any second. Does anyone know if Pioneer got the noise down on those drives in the last two years?

I have one and it doesn't seem too noisy. Then again I really haven't used it too much, but the times I have it seemed to work really well.

I notice it making a lot of noise when I insert a DVD. It spins up quite fast and then backs off a little, but you can still hear it. My new NEC DVD-DL burner is so quiet I can't even tell it's running. It's just a bit of an overkill to put in a car.

try the nero tool, it will slow down the speed the drive operates and makes it silent. i used one in a shuttle home entertainment system and set it to work like 8-12 speed for cds and it was silent, the dvd part is silent natively
