    Post camera question....

I have a 2000 Ford F-350 Crew Cab dually 4X4 and it is a bit hard to see when I am backing up. I have ordered halogen reverse lights and plan to install some older white driving lights under the bed facing back and slightly down to help out. But as I was screwing around here in this forum reading other peoples comments I found a link to something that someone has done.

They added a rear facing video camera to assist them in seeing what is behind you. I have seen systems similar to this in the large RV's but never on a class B or smaller vehicle. Here is a link with a pic.

I do a little bit of fourwheeling and the camera would help a great deal when backing up in tights spots as well as when I go to hook up to one of my trailers.

But I would like to take the idea a bit further. I would like to be able to view what goes on in front of me as well similar to the police cars that have the forward facing cameras.

Any ideas or suggestions? I have plenty of mounting space for the cameras in front and back. Thanks for any tips or leads you can provide.

Not sure on what kind of camera to use but some of my ideas is that you would want to mount it out of sight or it could end up missing. You would also want it inside somekind of durable housing if you are off roading and I would suggest making som kind of air tight/ water tight box with a plexglass or bullet proof glass so that you can keep your lens clean. Maybe clean the glass with no fog so it doesnt fog up.

I had a camera from www.supercircuits.com (two, actually) that i got for $40 each. they are black and white and you have to make a waterproof case for them, but they work quite well. I mounted one on the left side of my bumper and had it facing right so I could see how close I was to the car behind me when attempting to parallell park (I drive a Chevy extended-cab). It worked, and the camera never got stolen, but I rarely used it.

Just a note: use electrical conduit to run the wires, otherwise the insulation might melt and short the camera, causing a small fire (which is the reason I no longer have the cameras--damn hot transmission)
