I have received my sample ic's today through...uhm..."proper" channels and everything seems in order but I also received an e-mail from philips a few hours ago regarding availability/pricing of the components. Well it doesn't look good. I explain.

    TEF6700HL In-stock Price Per unit: $3.85 MinQty:1520pcs
    SAA6588 In-stock $2.12 1520pcs
    TDA1599T In-stock $1.80 1520pcs
    TDA1572T In-stock $1.80 1520pcs

    Ouch. 1520pcs minimum order!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

    Damn.

I see three solutions here (I will not give up on this )

    1) Continue the device design as is and wish you guys good luck finding those ic's (I can't stock 4,500+ components, sorry). Note that the schematics will be available just in case someone manages to get his hands on those ic's. It's almost complete anyway.

    2) Re-design the device using components from another manufacturer (takes us to zero and all over again)

    .....or.....

3)Hack the hell out the CADET PC RADIO ISA card and transform it into a USB device

If someone can comment on the reception of the card I'll tell you how.
C'mon people give me your lights.

You should get on the phone with a rep and explain the situation or we will all have to pose as clients of a large corperation that will do thousands of dollars of business to get samples. Even if they charge for the samples who cares.

I was hoping not to have to solder anything (although i am pretty good) So i guess it is out of the question to have you guys build it for us if you cant get the parts.

I would do a little bit more research and see if there is a supplier that stocks these parts that is willing to sell them individually or atleast least a smaller minimum.

    It's not over yet!!

BTW what is up with the Cadet PC radio Card? Why do you ask about. What components does it have?

Philips stopped providing samples for many ic's (including those). I've managed to get the samples because my friend used to work at Philips and he knows some people there. Unfortunately this is a very limited source. The official excuse for not providing the TEF6700HL as sample is that the same chip is re-branded as ALPINE 15255Y01 (used in Alpine's new line of receiver modules) and because of the Philips-Alpine license agreement this is only available after approval from both companies. In reels of 1520pcs each. Man I hate this corporate/license stuff. Makes me sick

If there is a re-design you need to take into account 1 thing...

    /que dead horse beating/

audio through USB, this really would make this an all around solution, otherwise myself and some others will have to wait for the radioshark. (delayed again)

Reason: I do not have 3 audio inputs on my system.

    1- XMPCR
    2- WinTV
    3- AM/FM

Well there is no cents in creating a AM/FM radio that people can't get the parts for. Although a redesign is probably painful to think of it may be the only option.

The CADET card uses a Philips TEA5757N tuner chip, Philips SAA6579T RDS pre-processor and ADS's RDX-1187C RDS/RBDS decoder chip. It's pretty damn close to our target design. The only thing missing is the ISA/USB bridge (I found it ).
The exciting thing with this solution is that ISA/USB bridge can be in a form of a daughterboard (no soldering).
There is also an audio in plug on the board so that you don't loose the line in of your sound card.

Plus it's f*****g cheap solution. Aprox $10 for the CADET and $20-$25 for the bridge board. $35 bucks isn't bad, is it?

I still have to know how reception is......comments anyone?
