    Carputer-When will it get stable?

I've build my carputer finally like couple weeks ago. I got all that I need now...DVD-RW, gps, touchsreen, 200gb hd, bluetooth for phonecontrol.

But my computer freezes randomly. I believe it's a heat issue. I've installed a fan right on top of cpu and it has helped. However, that's not exactly why i'm posting this msg today.

Every 2 days, the windows gets corrupted. One or another kind of system dll/file is missing and i've to recover/restore the OS. So, what i'm looking for from my fellow carputer users is:

    1) How often this happens to others? If at all?
    2) What kind of recover methods are we using? A disk image is not the best for me since I don't hv IDE cd-rom, but a firewire based and that's not recognized by dos. I hate to add/remove cd-roms everytime there's a problem.

Currently i'm waiting for temperature to go down here in southern california, los angeles (around 96 degrees sometimes). Hopefully, within a month or so I could enjoy my carputer... I'll post pics of my work soon.

I have the same problem with the heat. As for your missing files problems, I would suggest a new hard drive.

I was running off an old 20gb hard drive. I just installed a 200gb diamond maxtor hard drive (7200rpm). I'm hoping as the weather gets better so will carputer. Thanks for sharing...

You might want to set up your drives a little differently. Get a 40g or 60g laptop drive (low power and more rugged) and install your OS on that. Then use you other drive as your media drive.

I have also been considering Water Cooling. Mainly for show but it does get hot around here too during summer, plus my car is black and sometimes i get in the car and the seats and steering wheel burn me.

I have never setup a water cooling setup but figure if i start running into problems i would go that route.

Another idea that i have pondered would be to rig you vents so that when the AC was on a valve would open up and blow cold air in the Glove Box (where the carputer is located)

antimatter: watercooling won't go below ambient temperature unless you use a Peltier...I would not recommend a peltier. you could get really bad condensation problems unless you use a controller. i use the AC vent to my glovebox solution. i'm about to relocate my comp back to my trunk though, so i'm hoping it won't overheat.

He isn't using two hard drives at the same time. Or are you? I would advise against installing two hard drives. You are just adding to the heat with another hard drive. Just keep your one larger hard drive or like antimatter said, get a laptop drive.

Have you taken temperature readings and compared them with the manufacturer's specifications? If you're running an AMD have replaced it with an Intel? This is just common sense troubleshooting.

Also, try some new memory. That's the first thing I would do.

What about other possibilies like your power supply? How are you powering your system. Just like with a desktop, insufficient or bad power will cause all kinds of system problems, one being freezing. Please list your entire system specs.

If he is indeed having the same problem as me it isn't the PSU. Mine works just fine at night or when it isn't hot. Only reboots during the daytime when it has been in the sun.
