Question What steps are you M10000 people following when installing XP Pro?

Do you, install XP Pro, SP1 then the VIA drivers? (4in1, Audio, VGA, USB2.0)?

The reason I'm asking is XP cannot see my secondary IDE device (my DVD player) and thus makes it impossble to install anything from CD. The BIOS however does see the DVD drive. So somewhere along the lines the DVD drive is lost, I even tried swapping the drive to a regular CD-ROM and no luck.

Are you guys even using the VIA drivers or are you letting XP pro do the work for you? I know MANY people have this same setup, so I'm sure someone can chime in and give me a tip...

    Thx.

FINALLY!! Glad I'm not the only one with this issue. Mine will work for a little while, then all of a sudden, the second IDE and com ports will stop working. My carputer has been put on hold for a few weeks so I haven't tried anything recently. I plan to mess with it this week. So far nothing but reinstalling has fixed the issue for me.

I installed XP just fine on mine, using XP Pro w/ SP1 install CD. Loaded the VIA drivers afterwards, but you shouldn't need any special drivers to do the install.

Hmm, I'll do a format and reinstall with a different CDROM.

    Ill go this route:
    1. XP Pro
    2. XP SP1 (downloaded EXE)
    3. VIA Drivers (any special order here?)
    4. GPS Software

Hopefully this will work. Im using the drivers off the VIA site, are they the best/latest ones?

Happened again, after I installed service pack 2, then Deluo GPS, then the VIA drivers the VIA driver screwed my secondary IDE. I think it's the XP VGA drivers that do it. HRm.....

Try getting the drivers by themselves instead of 4-in-1 or Hyperion or whatever they are. I had trouble like that too, and that seemed to work ok even though I installed all four of the drivers.

Where did you find them individually? I only found the 4in1 on the VIA website? Thx for the help.

I dont have M10000 but M9000 wich is basicly the same board, i installed Windows XP SP1 first, then VIA 4in1 (Hyperion), not the latest but v4.43 (available through www.viaarena.com, go to drivers, hyperion than halfway down the page). After that VGA drivers, use the drivers that came with your board, or if you updated the bios drivers from www.viamainboards.com. After that install audio drivers, again from your cd or updated drivers available through viamainboard.com (i tried the drivers from www.viaarena.com but i did not notice any diference). If everithing is ok your windows should work as supposed to and you are ready to install updates (or SP2, but be aware that are reported problem with i.e. WinAmp). If you can't access your cd-rom during the installation process, chek the following: master/slave setting (jumper on the back of your cd-rom, preffered master on secondary ide port), check your bios settings (is auto selected for the ide channel you are using or is it disabled, i know some situations that a disabled (none) ide setting still show cd-rom in bios post. Still not working then try an other IDE cable, make sure it's not too long and that you are using the most opposite connectors. That is everything i can think of right now, hope it was of any help.

Are you saying that there are reported software conflicts between ie and WinAmp inside SP2?

    Warning:

Currently we encounter crashes with Media Portal in combination with Windows XP Service Pack 2. We do not know yet if this is a bug in SP2 or in MP, so be warned until this issue has been solved. Winamp seems to have the same problems too with SP2.
