Talking Mounting and connecting DVD-ROM in dash.

I'm still getting all my parts to build my carputer.
I am going to mount the Pioneer slot load DVD-ROM under my stereo.
My company's software and hardware supplier is getting me a custom 15 foot IDE cable for my DVD-ROM. The only thing is that it is flat and not rounded cause they don't have shrink wrap that is 15 feet long, but O well.
About the vibrations - - I will not drive and watch DVDs.

    That won't work... Sorry.
IDE drives simply don't function once the cable gets beyond about 25 inches or so.
    There is too much interference.
Save your money.. That approach won't work.

I know there is IDE to firewire adapters. I'm not sure how new your board is or if it is equipped with firewire ports, but that would work. A lot of newer PC boards have firewire on them.

Otherwise, 12 ft. is way to much as mantis said.

Well for 25 buks at my place would you try it?

I have heard of people getting 15 to work, the most I saw at a store was 48" (4 feet)which is longer than your mentioned amount above.

I will get the cable as I said, hook it up to my PC at home to my current DVD and pray.

If it works, then well your wrong and I'm a happy DVD watcher. And if it doesn't I just wasted 25 buks. I'm not losing much buddy. Money hahahaha If I was concered about saving money would I go and put a 1ghz PII in my Honda Prelude that has about 100 other mods?

No, I wouldn't spend $25 bucks to see if it works, because it won't work. It is fact. You might as well light the money on fire.

This board is supposed to be about trying to help other people with their setups and thats all I was trying to do.
Unfortunately, you got all defensive and attempted to defend yourself by saying how much money you have and dude.. thats sad.. I could care less. Your whole attitude is wrong.

Whatever happened to the days where people on this board were actually interested in helping one another? I've been on this board since '99 and some of these newbies are ruining it.

    Let the flames begin..

Hey man I'm gonna hafta agree with everyone else on this one- IT WONT WORK! There is no possible way an IDE cable can work at 15 feet. The most Ive heard of working with a clear picture and very little interference is 12feet. Also a shielded one is not gonna help any, its just too far. All this talk about how much money you got should mean your not to much of a cheapass to buy a firwire external DVD. Im going to buy an Addonics Pocket Firewire DVD to put in my center console- dont waste your time and money man, do it right the first time.

I am curious how you get a flat shielded IDE cable.

    Ribbon cable is not shielded.

    Caliboy,
Thanks for posting the link on how to make a 15' IDE cable. This is a great solution and something that I may consider for my install too.

    Thanks man!
