talked to creative tech support today, thought Id share

If you get a Soundblaster Live 5.1 card, with the 2x20 connector on board, you can get the Optical Digital I/O card from creative.

The only catch is the newer models of the Live card do not have this header, so you have to search around and try to find one that does.

So what he's telling me, is that for for $30 for the Live card and $60 for the I/O= $90, you can have a card that is right up there with the $200+ Audigy 2 Platinum.

I noticed if you dont install the Creative software, it uses the Windows Generic USB Soundcard driver for the MP3+.

If not, can the Driver be modified to do this?
I don't understand why the MP3+ would not allow playback via optical in. It says right on the creative site that it supports S/PDIF in, so if I bought this and found out that it would only work in record mode, I would be ****ed. I loaded the creative software and it works great with the NX. Good luck.

thats what I thought too. It only supports SPDIF in for recording.

    update!

got my optical out installed today, problems solved. The difference between analog and optical is remarkable. No more whine or background pulses. Just crisp, clear music. I ended up buying the Audigy NX which seems to work just fine for me...

Oh thats great to hear. I ordered my optical out kit yesterday and expect it next tuesday. I'll try to make the conversion next weekend. For a soundcard I bought a terratec six-pack 5.1 with optical in and out. I hope this sounds better than what I had. Was the conversion difficult to do? Did you get everything you needed to make the change?

    Take Care,
    Peter

If the MP3+ supports recording from optical in, it *should* be possible to get it to work by creating a special DirectShow filter graph. To test this out, you can download graphedit from microsoft and create a graph with just the MP3+ Audio Renderer device and an MP3+ Audio Capture device, connect them directly to each other, then right click the MP3+ select properties and choose the optical in, then just hit play. Using this method, I have been able to do things like play the line input from one soundcard as the output from a second sound card. If you can get this to work, you can write a program that creates the same filter graph using DirectShow.

The mod wasnt that hard to install. Its only 6 points to solder. Once you get the hang of the 1st one, the rest arent too bad. I admit, I had my fingers crossed when I powered it up hoping it would still work.

If you havent seen this, here is a tutorial on doing the optical mod:

    That's a piece of cake.
Shouldn't take more than a few minutes for the whole project.

    Cool!
Thanks for the PDF, I'll give it a read.
