I got my optical adapter today, I'll probably do the solder job this weekend.

I highly recommend the use of a hobby c clamp for anyone doing this mod. It makes life a lot easier when you can solder without worying about your contacts moving.

It was actually pretty tough to find these. They didn't sell them at Sears, Home Depot, or any of my local hobby shops. I ended up finding them at Harbour Freight.

Good luck with the mod. It is worth the money if you were having noise problems.

I just lined up my contacts and put a piece of electrical tape to hold it in place so I could solder the 1st contact. Once that was done the board stayed in position for the other 5

It's soldered. I'll try popping it in the car this afternoon and see if it worked ok. Anybody try replacing the LED on the board to a different color?

    Guys,
I learned all this the hard way about a year ago. One downside to the optical output is
that it does not play audio for the XM weather/traffic stations. I have the PCR analog
output connected also for these stations. I keep the line-in muted otherwise.

I wonder what could be different about the way that sound is produced to make it not work on just those channels. But they dont even have traffic or weather for san antonio, so it makes no difference to me. But, curious.

Did you find that the quality of music reproduction has increased greatly since you did the optical input?

Could this be due to your setup with regards to center voice? Or something along those lines?

Uh yeah...the sound is 100% better with the SPDIF mod. I found the analog audio to be totally unacceptable.

I'm not sure what 'center voice' is?
