Well I say "WTF was I thinking!" all the time, but mine is in the software area.
OK I was curious if any of you have made a "DUH" during install? here is mine.
I wire up the carputer, have the screen in but not mounted. I wanted to test out the GPS. Everything is working powers up and all is good. Then I started to have some issues with the GPS unit, not keeping lock. So I am removing it and readding it in windows. Turn off the car to give windows a fresh boot, then I cannot get my system to boot back up. I was like what the hell. So I notice I have a single beep on the opus, which is lower battery power right. So I figure what the hell I probably need a new battery anyway. Go get the new battery throw it in(60 bucks more added to the project!). And still no love from the Carputer. Well as I am sitting there pondering the thing, I kick on the radio start listening to some music and low and behold the carputer boots right up. My dumb *** used the ACC line that my amp was hooked up too, from the radio! So it was not sending the signal until I turned on my radio. Well I got a new battery out of it!
By the way in the opus manual there is a slow beep meaning idle and a longer beep with less time in between for the low battery, I was mis reading the beeps.
My next generation Front End is right on schedule.
It will be done sometime in the next generation.
I'm a lesbian too.
I am for hire!
Mine is when creating a power supply molex to external USB enclosure power cable. The enclosure had a six pin din connector, two pins at 12v, two at 5v and two ground. I carefully checked them and drew diagrams and completely missed the fact I had managed to mirror the connections in my little diagram. 12v was now going to the 5v input. Oddly enough, both the enclosure & HDD don't seem to want to work any more.

i ruined a 40x4 char lcd when i wasn't paying attention... giot dyslexic and forgot if red or yellow was the +5v rail... ended up sending 12vdc to the 5vdc lcd panel. the backlight came on just fine, and i didn't notice it right away since i didn't have it set to display anything during post/boot. but when it got into windows and winamp started, and the lcd remained blank, i started looking things over. i basically smacked myself when i realized what i'd done. i could not touch the LCD to disconnect it - it was too hot to touch! thankfully it was only a $20 lcd from eio.com, but still...

On my first carputer, well truckputer, I wired my door locks to a parallel port relay card and forgot that the computer turned all the parallel bits high on startup.
Yeah, there was a fire.

Check it out?!
I haven't destroyed any hardware yet (thank god for fuses), but my biggest screw-up so far was laying the VGA cable backwards and not noticing until I had put the whole vehicle interior back together and started installing the screen.
I think the guy at Staples still is wondering why the hell anyone would want a VGA gender mender.

I think I blue out two 4" psone screens, they were like 25 bucks each. I still have no idea what I did wrong. I think I just plugged the wrong connectors in when I took them stripped them down and put them back together.
I also hardwired my Escort 8500 radar detector and it suddenly stoped working. THat's ******* $300 so I better figure out how to claim it under warranty.
Dunno WTF i was thinking when i fried my new inverter the other day. I cut the power switch wires and wired it up to my buss bar which powers the 2 case fans from the amp remote lead (12v+) so in essence i zapped the power switch for the inverter with 12v plus the 12v lead from the battery, switched it on and was like now wtf, it has power...DOH! disconnected it, rewired the original switch but now it just goes into constant fault mode. damn my whole system is ready and now i have to go buy another inverter
I got another screw up, although I did not break anything with this one, just a stupid mistake. I was planning on wiring the audio to the aux input on my pioneer stereo. Got everything installed with the carputer. Ripped apart the dash, got the stereo out and wolla I HAVE NO AUX INPUTS!!!! I have the stupid IP-Bus hookup for the pioneer. Needless to say put the dash back together, had to wait a day then go get the IP-BUS to RCA input converter from a local stereo install shop. Waisted bout 3 hours with that one!
