    long 44pin ide cable?

what's a good source for a nice long 44pin ide cable? the longest i've been able to find is only about a foot long. i'd like to mount my cdrom a little further away, and this dinky little cable that came w/ my sbc just doesn't cut it.

or in lieu of a source for a pre-made cable, does anyone know if the length specs for the 44pin cables are the same as the 40-pin cables (about 30" if i remember right)? if so, i can just buy some ribbon cable and make my own, so that the connectors will be exactly where i need them.

well the max is acutaly 24" (for 40 pin) , i'll look right now for an extension cable, if not they wont be to fun to make.
    Try This:
    http://www.mycableshop.com/3rd_Level/INTERNAL-44Pin.htm
They're expensive, 48$! for a 48 inch extension cable, but theres a big range of em there for cheaper
    http://www.mycableshop.com/sku/IDE44X48.htm
They also make custom cables, proll also not cheap

no it isn't. IDE specifications allow for 36" with no problems. check newegg.com for 36" ide cables. (40 pin)

a home made 36" 44 pin cable should be just fine. Be sure to crimp your connectors well, and use quality parts.

yeah thats wierd, hmm why do i think its 24? thers 12 inch in a foot rite? anyways i said i wouldnt like to make a 44 pin cable, cause truthfuly i have no patience , and i end up smashing something before i finished, Im guessing the 44s can go alot farther because of the current they carry in em

everything i found on google last night actually said the limit on length for an ide cable (40 or 80 pin) was only 18". now that's obviously bunk - i've got some much longer than that in many boxes at home and work and they all work great.

making cables? heh... this little 12" cable i have is one i hodge-podged together myself. the sbc came with a little 3 connector 44 pin cable, but since i don't have any 2.5" drives (yet) i cut off the last 4 (power) and then took an exacto, separated each conductor, and put a 40 pin IDE IDC on in the middle of the cable, and again at the end of the cable. it was working fine on the workbench, but now that i i'm about ready to actually put it in the car, i realize i need a much longer cable. DOH! i can easily recycle my 40 and 44pin IDCs, so i guess i just need to head down to my local parts house (www.electrotex.com) and pick up some bulk ribbon cable. either that or recycle one of my existing long 40 pin ide cables by cramming individual conductors into a 44 pin idc... THAT will be tedious, but it'll also be FREE - always a big plus in my book.

FYI - the pinout for the first 40 pins of a 44pin ide connector are IDENTICAL to a 40 pin ide connection. the last 4 pins are only for power and ground.

yeah i was aware of that, my bad if i said something that contradicted that. Anyways i was wondering if you had tried installin an O/S or somethin large across your more than 24" IDE cable? also it would probaly be simpler to make a "head" that would basicly be two male heads on each side, and just connect two IDE cables. Also if you do end up making a extension IDE from scrap please post with how that turns out, and the lenth
    Thanks !

nobody in this thread said anything about teh pinouts... i was just posting it for general knowledge in case someone else tried to build a "hybrid" 40/44 pin cable, and found this thread in search.

i think i understand what you mean on the "head" thing... i wonder if fry's sells male IDC connectors, or, if you will, a 40 pin gender bender with male on both sides? if so, then i can just make an extension off my existing cable. less futzing around with IDCs and independant strands... that's tedious. yes i have the patience, but i dont know if i have enough band-aids.
