just splice the wires inside the insulator on the cable and solder them directly onto the board if you like.
Personally I wouldnt do that and id have some sort of plug there instead of a static connection. Even if you cant find a USB connector, just use any other sort of 5 pin connector (including the chasis for ground).
So your saying... cut my current cable.... solder on a new cable that has a new connector on it, and then plug in. Right?
if so... How can I tell which wire is which?
Colour code. there should be a red (+ve), black (-ve), green (data+), white (data-). and a braded sheeth (earthing).

everything is mounted on a hinged board in my trunk. It was fine in the upright position, but when the board slipped down to the down position. there wasnt enough slack in the wires
They make connectors now! Here's Type-A if it's of any help.
ok, So I opened it all up for soldering today... and I got problems
as you can see, the Gray Usb Cable on the bottom (left to right) has, silver ground, grey, green, black, red... and the black USB CAble(the GPS) on top (left to right) has green, blue, yellow, red, black, white,
6 and 5 dont match...
How should I solder these?
I'd suggest you get a DVM or just a continuity tester and check the old connector. If it uses the standard colors correctly, the pins shound be in the order of black, green, white, red if you're looking at the male connector with the pins on the bottom, but don't trust that. Make sure! So most likely if that's the order of the old one (black, green, white, red) and the new one is black, green, grey, red, then just connect it like that and chop the other 2 wires (blue and yellow) off and tape/heatshrink over them. I'd keep the wires short so there's not a whole lot of unshielded wire there too.
EDIT: Oops, just noticed a mistake in the colors.
so your saying the blue and yellow wires are worthless?
I would do the continuity testing.......
but unfortunately I already hacked about the old connector in a frustrated attempt to see where the wires led to which pins... I couldn't really tell, and now my connector is in shreds... Thanks for the suggestion though Curiosity, It definatley would have worked...
Any other ideas?
Maybe someone with the same GPS would be nice and figure out which wires go where?
