I used to think relay card on parallel port is the best design because it was easy to implement. After designing one to control a magnetic card writer, it does all sort if strange stuff when booting up the machine. Such as it will turn the motor on/off, write a bit to the card...etc. Once all is settled and I got my apps running then it behave properly.
Problem with most parallel port relay card :
Bulky, big connectors.
Will react to any software that control the port.
The POST or windows booting up can start turning the relays on or off.
Unplugging the parallel cable will reset all the relays to on or off.
Doesnt keep the state of the relay when the PC has shutdown.
Im designing a serial port version that remove all the problems with a typical parallel port design :
Anyone interested in serial controlled Relay/Input card?
Much more compact, versatile and secure.
Still working on it, hopefully to get it all done fairly soon.
