    configuration Q's

    Hi,
im new but i don't think this question fits in the newbe catagory. Well i was wondering what you guys did about storage to make it so you can just shut down your computer by just turning off the power. like preventing data loss. would it be wise of me to put the os on a compact flash ide and then all the mp3's on a harddrive so if the hd gets bumped i can just erace it and put new ones on? and what about dataloss turning it off with out selecting shutdown. also i had a quick question about the os i was thinking of using win 98lite. i was wondering how i use that. any info would be grately appriciated.
    Thanks,
    pyro

Pretty much everyone uses a shutdown controller which signals the OS to shut down the PC (soft off) avoiding the problem of hard power offs. Flash cards are a bad idea because of write cycle limitations. The Opus 90w and 150w both have shutdown controllers builtin.

I use a inverter and I have jsut beening killing the power for a while now and I have not had any problems. I know it is not the best solution but has worked for about 2 months problem free. I plan on eventually having a power/hibernate button that i can hit as i get ready to park. It is just the easiest and cheapest solution for me.

With an inverter you can set up a shutdown controller with a couple relays too

yeah, i just don't want any chance that the computer could ever be left on when i leave teh car. I have the relay that powers the inverter kill the power with the ingition. Last thing i want is to be driving home from college or where ever else and come back to a dead battery because it didn't shutdown right. Still something for the orginial poster to think about.

I think I'm actually going to do just that. I'm gonna get a DiskOnModule, probably a 512mb and put my OS on that, and just have my mp3s on a hard drive. I sure hate reloading my CarPC, especially with all the special timings for my PSone Screen...
