I've looked at linear actuators before...expensive...I was going to use actuators for my project but I can't find any that are small enough to do wha t I want to do.

I thought about a servo or stepper also, but then I have to have a controller, because they need PWM. I'm not sure how to set all that up, it would also add a good bit of cost to my project.

If we could find a linear actuator that was say 3 or 4 inches long. an actually moved 2 or 3 or 4 inces. It would work perfectly for both of our projects. I would need 2 though. Then you could control it through a regular dpdt relay.
The volts it ran on woulnd't really matter because you could get a zener diode to reduce the voltage.

I don't have that much space, plus I have not seen any linear actuators that small. A screw drive might do the trick if you could find one small enough. I plan to mount something like a servo horn on the motor then attach a rod to the end of it, the the other end will attach the monitor (the way the brace works on a folding table).

    More Mods,

Just for my Atlanta brother!! Here's an idea that might work. The "in" and "out" are microswitches that detect when the screen has reached it's final position and shut off the supply to the motor. The DPDT switch should have a "center off" detent so that you can stop the screen in mid position and manually jog it in or out. I used +12V in this example. I would suggest you keep looking for a +12V motor so that you won't have to find +5V some where. Although, you could get a cheapie Radio Shack adapter that puts our 4.5v or 7v...

Let me know if you have any questions!!

Hey Mike, where you been hiding?

Being able to move the monitor to any position I want would be great. I was thinking that that would be next to impossible, and I don't have a clue how to do that. I have searched high and low for a tiny 12v gear reduced motor, but no luck. The reason I want gear reduction is that all that gearing will help stabilize when using touch screen, also slow the motion down.

I dont really understand your drawing, I need something that shows all the connecions and where they go. If you know how I can do all of this I would be very greatfull for your help.

I look forward to the next meet, then I can show this thing off.

    Sorry...not hiding..just busy.

ps I'm the guy with the yellow camaro.
I remember...and you had the really nicely built case....and you do some really nice skins for MediaCar.

I don't know if I can get time to draw this thing out in any detail for you. Perhaps there's someone on the boards with a bit of time that could take some pix of the switches, wiring, motor, and 5V adapter. It's really pretty straight forward. Two microswitches, one mounted so that it opens when your monitor closes, the other mounted so that it opens when you monitor is fully open...one DPDT switch with center off (Radio shack?), and your motor. It the motor is +5v then you need to change the +12v label in my drawing to +5v supplied by a Radio Shack DC-DC adapter.

Sorry...but things are a bit hectic....

Let's target the next meet in October!

Would I need a 2, 3, or 4 pole DPDT relay to be able to have override and adjusting?

edit: or maybe a regular relay then 2 DPDT relays one for automatic (ignition) control and one for manual (switch) control.

ok so u got a problem and u need a hand?
ok u want a motor that goes either way yes?
you want it geared down so it goes slower and a lower power one will do the job
i am in the uk so some EXACT details might be slightly different to your situation ( like availability of parts) but it is all basically the same theory

to make a motor move one of two ways when a button is pushed you will need two relays ( there is more than one way of doing it so i cant say what type to use yet)

what exactly do you want the system to do? my idea that i have for u supposes that you are pushing the button untill it reaches an extremity at which point it stops untill you push the other button at which point it goes back in but you can stop at any given point inbetween hows that sound?

if this will do you as a design i will post on here in SUPREME detail but so as not to have wasted an afternoon tell me if this is what u r after

    PoD
    amd k6-2 450
    64 meg ram
    5 gig hdd
all in an old bit of metal
    all for under £20

    and now a 500watt inverter for £20
    thats £40 in total
not too bad for a noob
