you want it geared down so it goes slower and a lower power one will do the job
i am in the uk so some EXACT details might be slightly different to your situation ( like availability of parts) but it is all basically the same theory

to make a motor move one of two ways when a button is pushed you will need two relays ( there is more than one way of doing it so i cant say what type to use yet)

what exactly do you want the system to do? my idea that i have for u supposes that you are pushing the button untill it reaches an extremity at which point it stops untill you push the other button at which point it goes back in but you can stop at any given point inbetween hows that sound?

if this will do you as a design i will post on here in SUPREME detail but so as not to have wasted an afternoon tell me if this is what u r after

The primary function would be ign. on monitor out, ign. off monitor in. It would also be cool to have an override to have complete control over positioning, ie someone riding with me, glare on the screen.
ok, heres what I have so far. Im not to sure about the microswitches, where/ how they go. I threw in some switches there on the left, if you want to play with them.

Edit: the momentary rocker would be for override adjustment. I'm not sure what needs to be SPDT, DPDT I was just guessing.

    5v!

just get a LM7805 Regulator, by far the best and simplest way to generator 5v

Sounds good. How much load can they handle?

    MoreMods,

Don't go building a regualtor and using a bunch of relays...unless you want the joy of tinkering. Just use the simple schematic I gave you. It consists of one DPDT switch, two micro-roller limit switches, and an el cheapo cigarette lighter adapter from Radio Shack.

Here as simple an illustration as I could come up with. You've already ID'd all of the parts you'll need. Now just wire them up with 20Ga wire from Radio Shack like the picture shows. Place one roller limit switch to that it opens when your screen is fully opened, and the other when it is full closed (allow for some slight mechanical adjustment for fine tuning the limit points). This should work fine AND give you the ability to manually adjust the screen anywhere between the limits by pushing the rocker switch.

That looks great, but is there no way to have the ignition in there as primary, and rocker as override? I've studied it for a while and have not found a way, but there must be some way. It would most likely require, as you say "a bunch of relays".

Edit: I see your only using two pins on the microswitches, should they be spst?

anyone thougt of using a motor and tray from a cd drive?
seems as if it should have all the parts with 12v
gear driven makes a good mechnical sound when moving
and you can get a drive anywhere for less then 10 bucks

I have about 2" of depth, so there's no way that would work.

what about using it to push / pill a pair of cables ?
you could get heater control cables from a a dealer-
say for recurculation door most times those are
about 2 foot long and can be cut down to size to fit.
you may also try a junk yard , then you could also get
the clips and brackets to mount them
