    Seth's Radio issue

I'm not opening Pandoras box, but I hope I'm not pointing it out either.

    I had this thought...

If it's (eventually) USB. An it takes RDS data...

Can software be used to record the audio stream and assign RDS data as an MP3 tag?

If such software is developed, is it neccesarally illegal? After all, it is legal to VHS tape a show, and audio tape the radio as long as you dont distribute or proffit from it. I always thought it was because the quality is poor. But some of my older songs, despite high bit-rates, arn't much worse than FM radio quality.

    Thoughts??

That would only work if you have a radio-station that outputs the Artist/Title via rds (and only that, preferably).

I think DAB/XM are more suited for this, but it would surely be a nice add-on!

Not to be a stikler or just get on people's nerves in here, but technicaly speaking... It is illegal. If it was me, I would just say **** the RIAA and the MPAA and whatever other governing bodies over broadcast media simply because fo the quality. But yes, it is illegal. But I don't think the RIAA or MPAA would come after one person for something they are trying. (Just don't sell it!!)
WTF?!? You did what? With who? Why?

I don't think recording FM radio is illegal.

in the UK: it is illegal to rebroadcast it once you record it, and it isnt legal to record it (though it isnt illegal either)

It's not illegal if you keep it for your own use. FM is not encrypted and the signal is
degraded. So everything follows fair use.

That issue concerned us also. The scenario you describe is applicable only if three parameters are effective simultaneously:

    1) Audio is available in digital form through the USB
    2) Radio station broadcasts track/song data and not station data or anything else
    3) Audio tracks are consistent and not interrupted by speech or anything else

    Facts are:

    1) We'll use the USB port to parse commands and for control only. Audio is analog and not digital.
    2) We'll not provide any GUI solution just the tools/drivers and SDKs to do so.
    3) RDS manipulation can produce ID3 type tags for songs
    4) This is not a commercial product and different terms apply. It will be covered by GPL licence. XM is a commercial venture based in subscriptions.

    Hope this clears things up

    It is illegal
    But it's not

While it is true the RIAA and MPAA absolutely hate fair use, Congress hasn't COMPLETELY gotten rid of fair use yet
