We should create a group to work on this hack, collaborate ideas, and get it working.
After seeing the outrageous prices for XM PCR on the net, I know for a fact that there are a ton of people interested in this hack.
Curious thought here. I beleive in theory this could work.
The optical mod for the skyfi bypasses the factory analog out..( i think) so if you modded your skyfi with the optical mod, and the modded the home base for the usb output. you should be able to acheive a skyfi pcr... just thinking..
Might be wrong but just was thinking...

just not to take another chance, I got the XM direct from circuitcity todayfor $49, that does not mean I would not go with the SkyFi option but just incase they discontinue this too, at this price, it is too cheap to pass, besides, I get 30 day to return it.
So, let us see:
* XM tuner source - check
* optical mod - check
* workaround - waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting.........
Guys, please, don't call it hack, it is not, it is just an interface that the good folks here are working on. The word "hack" within the context of XM might mean something "bad" to some "buttheads"out there
Since when is HACK a bad word??I'm sorry if XM might interperate this incorrectly, them RIAA PUSSY'S.

cover all our bases in case one of us fell through.

frodo, using the computer interface you are working on, will the display / buttons on the skyfi still do anything? at that point it might be worth the extra $50 for having a dedicated display for it. or are you just tearing it apart for the radio and processor?
don't worry i know i usually don't make much sense
no offense, but if it works on both the computer and the skyfi display, why would you even do the computer mod? my philosophy on having it on the computer is so that you dont have all these extra boxes laying around, and that you can control every single thing on the computer... its a fine question, i just would wonder why you would want both of them to work.
I don't have the parts or the time needed to do the mod right now.
So I haven't tested. I only have the skyfi and home kit, and that cost
me $100

i agree with you on the box issue, i would probably mod it into my centre console. why would someone use a char lcd in addition to a touchscreen in other situations?

I agree with Frodo, need to peruse both options.
It would be nice to have the ability to plug in a skyfi unit in the car or home and also connect it to a computer in either place. I do think the XMdirect is the best base for a simple cable connection and clean install. I was told it has digital audio out built into the head unit plug from the factory. If true this may be something we could patch into USB also, possibly with USB a sound card to make a sweet all digital car pc device.
Thanks to all for the good work, I hope a few more readers will match my bounty on this project. kingtut, I didn’t come up with anything useful yet from the FCC site but will upload and link the mod pics back here tomorrow when I get home.
