    Espresso Impressions

Got the Espresso pc hooked up.. I did an install of 2K, but it proved a little slow on the standard 64mb (have got a 256mb sodimm on the way)... then again, most systems are going to be slow under 2k with that amount of ram.

Got a copy of WinME and put that on instead... much better... bootup times are pretty short (yet to cut out the uneccessary gubbins) and performance all round it quite reasonable - around the same kind of speed as a P3-700 I have sitting around as a web browsing box. Speed is easily good enough to watch high quality encoded Divx/Xvid movies. Sound is as good as you normally get from a straight forward stereo soundcard - I certainly can't tell much difference between it and a SB Live 1024 I have in my main machine (I tested them both connected to a Sony component amplifier and a set of Tannoy Mercury speakers... out of the box the Espresso was weaker sounding, but once I'd matched the Winamp EQ settings, the sound was virtually the same) ... I'm not interested in DTS/5.1, which I know some folks are.

One thing however; the svideo out wasn't particulary great with the standard
ME or 2K built in i810 video drivers... the newer ones from Intel seem to sharpen up the image quite a bit.. and let you play around with overdrive, flicker control and other bits and pieces.

All in all, a nice bit of kit.. and an impressively small form factor!

Hi all, does anyone have any thoughts on this product as well?

I've always wondered about the performance of those Espresso machines, and other pre-assembled mini pc's... especially how they handle the simple 3D animations e.g. Winamp Visualizations.

And thanks for the review MegatronUK!

(My first post in this forum, woohoo!)

I did try the full screen visualisation feature of winamp... but it's not too impressive to be honest. The old Intel i810 video chip just really doesn't cut it for 3d. Seems to work perfectly fine otherwise though. Plays back my movies and mp3s with little effort though (also got a new 5400rpm 40gig disk to install - it uses standard laptop hard drives, which should speed bootup and playlist scanning a little).

I would imagine that unless you want to play games or have fancy full screen winamp visualisations, then this little machine would probably cope with anything you could throw at it; movies, mp3s, gps navigation.. whatever.

I would personally ditch Me and stick 2k or XP on there Once you've loaded it up with 256mb RAM, it should fly along pretty nicely with either 2k or XP (if you use XP, turn off all the "fancy stuff", you won't be seeing it anyway, but it still slows it down slightly)
