no, unless there is something newer out, you cant do this....USB drives need windows drivers to work.
Can I boot my persario 9100a from an external hard drive (usb)?
I just want to make sure that I can boot an OS from an external hard drive via USB

Not true at all. It depends on the MB BIOS. My system will support booting from USB drives.Originally Posted by stimps

Could you all help me find out if my presario 9100a will be able to boot from an external HD via USB? I intended on building a desktop HD -> laptop mobo connector and using a seperate power supply to power the desktop HD as a muddy looking alternative. However, if I boot from an external hard disk via USB, it would save me the troubleI know the presario is USB 1.1 ~ I just don't see how DIM can detect USB in order to boot an OS from an external HD. Can you all help me find a BIOS flash that would enable the DIM to read the external HD as a primary drive? Or Maybe a firmware upgrade for an external HD that would allow the DIM to read it? If not, where can I get a backwards-compatible BIOS chip for the presario board. Any ideas?
yeah, I didn't know if maybe you all had some super hi-tech links laying around that contained massive amounts of bios flashing software. Looks like I have to stick to IDE
woo-hoo!
Why don't you go into your motherboards BIOS and find out if it can boot from USB. There are a lot of motherboards that do this.Originally Posted by Joe_Collectible

Sorry mate, Didn't give out all the details... I have the ability to buy a presario laptop 9100a ... 1700 athlon, 256 ram, wireless card, 16meg radeon, 5 gig HD (hd clicks~scratched head/won't save data) - also has busted LCD - all for $50 Haven't bought it yet, I am trying to see if this will be useful as my carputer. I have other system components/options other than this, but if this can work without me buying a laptop HD, it would be cheaper for me than the alternative; therefore allowing me to go ahead with my touchscreen purchase
If you think I could prolly sell it on ebay for $50 as-is; I will buy it off the guy. If it doesn't work; I will put it on ebay.
THanks for your help btw
