Right now I have my system sitting on a table without a case. The AMD 2200+ is being cooled by the AMD equivlant of the Intel heatsink I have in this desktop (P4 3.0ghz OCed to 3.3GHz). On my desktop the CPU temp is ~38 C at idle with the fan turned down. On the carputer the AMD processor idles ~60C with the fan turned all the way up (~4800RPM). Full CPU usage temps get to ~66.
I used Arctic Silver 5. At first I thought I had put it on too thin so I took the HS off and put a little more on. It dropped idle temp from ~62 to 60.
I tried putting a case fan nearby blowing on the MB and heatsink but that only drops it a degree or two. I also put a laptop holder thing with fans in it under the MB but that didn't make a difference.
Any idea why this is running so damn hot? The system seems to be rock solid stable but I still don't like it running that hot. Plus I don't want to keep the heatsink fan going that fast. It's screaming!

i suggest u UNDERclock the cpu and also lower the volts running thru the chip. stock volts on a 2200 amd is 1.65v? not sure.

Get a better heatsink.
I have a Swifttek MCx462 low noise heatsink and it's cool as a motherfuxxer.
Upgrade your CPU fan ... I'm using a panasonic panaflow 90 high on a AMD2500.
Get yourself a P4 and stop scrimping !
It is a Thermaltake copper heatsink with an 80mm fan. Like I said before I have the equivlant Intel one on my desktop and it works VERY well. At idle my CPU runs about the same as my case temps.
I just can't figure out why the AMD runs soooo much hotter. Yes I know that AMD processors run hot but I've never seen one run like this before. Maybe it's because it's in open air and has no case airflow to keep it cool?

By design your heat sink fan will run more efficiently in open air spaces as opposed to restricting it with a case, in which case a squirrel cage fan would be more efficient.
So are P4's, in fact even more so:
Pentium 4 3.06 GHz = 81.8 watts
Athlon XP 2200+ 1.65 V = 67.9 watts
