It's an Infrared remote control system. Using the IRMan Winamp Plugin, for example, you can program any remote that you own to execute commands in Winamp. Very good for the car application. The problem is that since it's Infrared, you need line of site for it to work. Consider MouseRemote available at http://www.x-10.com. This uses radio frequency so you need no wiring or line of sight. I'm using it and it works great. Only $25US and here in two days. Use the Max10 Winamp plugin rather than the software that comes with it.

The IRman does not need a line of sight. At least mine doesnt. I have used mine through walls and across rooms. Granted, mine is the old school style IRman, where you had to buy a serial cable seperate. Maybe they changed something, or maybe its my remote. Check out irman at http://www.evation.com
    hope this helps

The IRman does need line of sight. IR as in infared light beam. You must have some thin walls.

The IRMan as any other IR reciever can recieve the IR beam even if the remote isn't pointed at the reciever. The beam is mearly bounced off the walls and off of other objects to get to the reciever.
