Do some research on car based systems with 3.5"HDs... they handle car accidents better than people and the only trouble with low temps has more to do with fluid bearing use than drive platters or other moving parts. And yes I do know a 'little' about the topic.

Yes I would be interested in the product you are describing, I think due to the price point differances in storage options and the small performance benefit for CF over a HD (desktop or laptop) you will get more storage/$ with a HD solution.

Hardly. You'd have to buy an mp3 player that will do everything you want your project to do, gut it for the internal hard drive, and then build it back into a custom mp3 player. Kind of pointless.

My first version used an HD....if there will be interest on this forum, I could also make a version with HD.

BTW, when trying to work out how to use my stock car radio as the amp, I found a lot of posts from people saying that the audio quality of the FM modulator approach really sucked.

You can't compare to a cd quality, but if you inject signal directly into the car stereo disabling external antenna when mp3 player is on, you get the maximum from your modulated signal. However there is also a standard jack output to send signal into an external amplifier or in AUX inputs of your stereo.

Read my earlier post and do some searching. Most stock radio units do not have such a plug. A few do. A few more have a socket you can coax into being such a plug with a custom cable and some custom wiring. I'm lucky enough that my radio has the latter. From what I saw when searching, the majority of people cannot hook directly into an aux input.

Adding an external amplified is always an option but then you're going down a more expensive track.

What you're suggesting really does sound exactly like an iPod + fm modulator. That will be far cheaper and more useful than a custom solution that does the same thing.

Early models did suffer from poor audio quality, I use one now with no loss of signal.

Post more details on your project... you will see more feedback.
