exactly that is what I have.. well sorta....

here is my setup
ipaq 3850 - $350 (5 years ago)
upgraded to ppc2003 $50 (upgrade few years ago)
1gb sandisk sd card $80 (2 years ago)
dual sleeve jacket - free from a friend
Globalsat cf 307b gps - $80 (ebay 1 year ago)
Globalsat AT-65 antennea - $20 (ebay 1 year ago)
External PCMCIA laptop drive brick - $70 (2 weeks ago)
20gb drive in brick - just died - drive was free... go figure

so anyway now im in the same situation... I have had most of the parts.. just bought the external brick for $70 and viola... 20gb....

anyhow... im debating after xmas to buy a lcd that i can hookup my ipaq to...
I found a cf card that will work but is not cheap....

I went this route as I have had the pda for a few years....
wanted a gps so for $100 got the gps cf card and antennea
still tring to see what software I like the best.... destinator, mapopolis, and a few others... tomtom.... there are others but dont remember...

I am a carputer newbie but I have been a avid Pocket PC user for four years. I currently use an iPAQ rx3715 with WIFI & Bluetooth. My cell phone is a Motorola V710 with BT and I can access the internet from just about anywhere at ~115k through Verizon's 1X service. I have a Royaltek RBT-3000 BlueGPS logger. I use Mapopolis software for the PPC and keep lots of map files and MP3's along with other stuff on a 1GB SD card. The only function the car serves is to charge the batteries when needed.

The best thing about this whole collection of stuff is that it is all self-contained and wireless. The worst thing about it is that it is a collection of stuff, not a system. As someone else already said, I end up spending a few minutes setting things up when I want to use it and then I have to put it away when I arrive somewhere.

I am going to put together a system based on the VIA SP8000 and load it with a WinCE custom build to see what kind of performance I can get out of a diskless and fanless system. What I'm shooting for is something capable of playing music, navigation, and ODBII monitoring. Email, internet access, and playing movies are secondary desires. Basically, I'd like to be able to do the things I already do on the PPC, but with a system built for and installed in the car. I expect the mobo to arrive next week. Looks like I'm about to find out how hard it is to get this stuff to work together under WinCE. Wish me luck.

None needed. I can't comment about the phone because of a pending class action suit against Verizon.

LOL, my cousin has that phone. He was offered by VZW to exchange it for the e815, but for some reason he likes that phone more. He has a huge amount of problems with it though. Has to take the battery out at least 3 times a day. I think with the e815, you can't access Express Network for free on N/W anymore because it has EVDO....

Go figure...

TomTom Navigator is the best Sat Nav software and it doesn't run on Windows or Linux. I doubt any of us would even be having this discussion if it did.

So, to summarise...

PDAs with a VGA output you can get. Will hook straight up to the Lilliput and run 640x480 at a decent refresh rate. No problem there.
A CF USB hub will take care of the USB connectivity from the Lilliput's touchscreen interface.

Lilliput UK have written a USB touchscreen driver which can be downloaded here:

Actually, at least some (I haven't checked all models) run on Linux. There's even some effort by a person to get the closed-source navigation software running on Sharp Zuarus PDAs.
