an average stick for 512mb cost around $60-180 depending on the company and speed
a pc3200 from kingston or CORSAIR MICRO cost around $90 as for a 1gb stick it would cost u more then $300

just saw the other post damn i a slow responder,
defrag you drive is a good idea, getting the ram is still a good idea, there is quite a difference between 512 and 768 that you will notice. I would still go and disable any thing that you dont need from running though

As far as the dual channel goes, it'll be faster then single channel, but if you dont have a sitck of 512 in there now its going to be the more expensive route, generally you want to use matched pairs for dual channel ram,

its amazing to me all the crap that somehow manages to find its way onto my computer..
I don't think I've ever played some of the 1+ gb games I have on here

I realize this is a total noob question.. but..

I've got 2 "pairs" of ram slots. as in 2 right next to eachother, then a space, then 2 more.. does this mean I could have 4 x 256 ? right now I have 1 256 stick and one empty slot in either pair. could I just buy 2 more 256 sticks (obviously the right type and speed) and stick those in there ?

more than likely. check your motherboard documentation but i dont see why not.

why would u go with 2x256 sticks, when u would want to update later on it the two sticks would be no good....just get 1 more 512 stick, it will cost lesser to get 1 512 rather then 2x256

run some spyware programs and also check for adware as welll,
spybot search & destroy along with Ad-Aware SE Professional, is a must do after or before u defrag your computer

just keeping in mind that to further upgrade would involve you taking out one or more of those sticks.

my only motivation for that was that I was under the impression that the 2 pairs of RAM slots had to be even. As in, I couldn't have 768mb in one and 256 in the other ? is that not true ?
