    Why is my xenarc working without a ground?

    Ok, i wanted to hook the xenarc up straight to my opus. So i cut the cigarette adapter and realized it only had 1 wire...so i hooked it to the yellow wire of my Y adapter coming from the opus and my tv powered on...

    I also tried my AC adapter for the xnearc. The AC has 2 seperate wires...a ground and a power. I know the ground cause it touched it to a power wire and it sparked. Anyway, i hooked the power wire to the yellow wire of the opus again and the xenarc powered up..

    Am I missing something?

    It is grounding through the vga cable. Very bad. I wouldn't do that too much. It will ruin either a mobo component or something in the monitor.

    Actually if you look at the cross section of the power wire on the very outside there is the black insulation inside of which is the hot(white in my cable) wire. But around the hot wire is some stranded wire which is the ground. Also if you open up the actual cig adapter you can see that the ground is connected to this stranded wire.

    { ( [0] ) }

    {} = Black Insulation
    () = Ground wire strands
    [] = Hot Wire insulation
    0 = Hot wire

    I would seriously recomend redoing your power wire. If you follow my diagram you'll see that if you've cut away your outer black insulation then your ground wire is loose and you don't want it shorting out.

    I hope all this makes sense

    Wires are wires, it dosent matter if you have AC or DC current. But, for future reference, AC's ground is the third prong.

    Why are you hacking up good equipment? Go to Radio Shack and buy a DC Power Plug, $2.59 for 2 of them. Just make sure you solder the tip correctly (tip is + on xenarc).

    what he means is using the other end of the plug where the 2 wires will come out of the screen.

    and while this is technically correct i think you are are very confused, the ground on the ac power in your home serves a very different purpose to the "ground" in your car
