Post HD power down in dos?

I currently am using my system in my house. When I put it in my car I would like to encorperate more features into it like a smart car alarm, or something cool like that. To do that the system has to be left on.

I was thinking I could get a small dc-dc psu enough to run a p-120 and a hard drive. Then when I turn off the mp3 player or shut the car off the hard drive would spin down. It would be running mpxplay and all the other stuff (except mp3s) off a ramdrive, mpxplay starts 5 times as fast this way.

Other reasons for doing this could include, rf / ir remote to have it automatically turn on and off amps and the radio. Or a cheep remote starter, door unlocker (if you have power door locks, my curent car does not, not nessesary in an escort! My parents bought a new ford van with out power door locks and I can't stand it, they come to pick you up somewhere with the door still locked!!!!)

I did try one program called spindown. It is ment for cd-rom drives that won't turn off. You need the irqs and divice numbers for it to work, Which I can't get. The only nice thing is it runs from the command line.

If anyone knows any command line power management programs that will run on Dos 7 with out windows up, please tell me.

    Lightbulb

Maybe I should just use windows and winamp. If I can find a nice plug in that can do as much as mpxplay I would be happy with it. Plus I have access to VB 6 and took and intro class last year. I could make some cool programs if I had the time!

This should be in the softwere section but it would be a good solution for this.

    Any Ideas?

    Cool

Even with the HD spun down, the system will drain the battery in about 8 hours. Just ask me how I know.

    Ok, thats what I'd think.
I could have a PIC or a BasicStamp do the cool stuff for me. That would be just plain sweet!!!! A rf recever hooked to a PIC and a couple relays would work great for turning stuff on and off (if I knew how to program a PIC!).
    Thanks anyways.
