that would be great - i've seen a lot about the IDE adaptor for the CF. Does CF really have fast enough access times to boot an OS 'quickly' though?

Roughly how large is Windows XP Embedded? Unless it's really small, like 15-20megs in size, I can't see how the current generation of Compact flash can load it quickly enough to be any good.

that would be a good question for people who are actually running xp embedded, as footprint of the os depends on the platform you are targetting it for.

The microsoft literature states that avg size is smaller than 100 megs with footprints as small as 15-20 megs. Although on this forum, I've read of footprints of over 100 megs cuz of all the usb drivers, windows media player, and other things that are needed in the xpe image for carputer software.

windows ce footprints can be as small as just the kernal at roughly 250kb! and the MII can boot ce from its onboard flash reader w/ via's fastloader utility. Although software wise, won't be as robust as xpe

I'm glad someone mentioned WinCE, or Pocket PC OS, because there are X86 varients to it, but nobody has coded any Audio software/frontends or GPS software for it yet.

Could quite easily run the OS off a flash card, and only the HDD to read MP3/Vid datat from.

zojirushi you get the ce developement kit through msdnaa? Don't think that was on my list. Although I will be taking a new class that will be opening up at the University in which we will be programming for Pocket PC devices.

yeah, i got it through msdnaa. The list varies from university to university I think because it depends on what the university is willing to subscribe too. Software is offered for free to students, but the university has to pay for it, although at discounted rates. If you don't have it, you'll probably have to ask around for the people in charge of it to have it added.

I think pocket pc and win ce are different things and I'm not sure how that stuff ties in with things like windows 2003 mobile. There aren't any multimedia frontends for the stuff cuz there isn't a whole lot of support for multimedia on these OSes. OSs? OS plural? plrual(OS)? bah you get the idea

Ya, I guess the details are still a bit sketchy on what exactly we will be programming on. Iíll find out in a few months...
I'll have to talk with my professor for my software practice class, as he is the one that will be teaching that other class next semester.
One thing I was surpised to see on the msdnaa list was Mappoint. Don't really see the purpose of a college student having that but hey I was happy.
