    Question Steering Wheel Controls

How exactly are most of you guys (the ones that are using extra buttons and so forth to control scripts and such) wiring up added controlability.

If you've seen 'Pathintosh', the only listed mp3 player on mp3car.com that runs macOS, what this guy did is what I plan on doing for my pathfinder (emailed him, just not sure if he checks that email still). I on the other hand don't have the existing radio controls so I will be purchasing the plastic casing and buttons and have to do some wiring.

So do most of you wire this through either the serial port or parallel port? And do you just have scripts running in the background that will execute dependent on what was pressed?

What would be the easiest way for me to control winamp as well as GPS software with a few buttons that execute scripts in the background (next/prev song, stop/start fwd/rev)?

Besides running these signals through the com ports, do you use relays or swithces? what kind of hardware are you using at the control end?

i used a keyboard hack for mine, relatively simple, if you do a forum search you should be able to find info easily. basically, you take apart a keyboard, trace the matrices of the keys to the controller board (there will be one horizontal and one vertical) and then sodder wires (i used cat5) to run to your switch. its kind of tricky to trace keys accurately and soddering in such a tight space can be a pain, but its a cheap and effective button solution
