Thread: BookPC pricing??

The cheapest would probably be: get a 'regular' bookPC and replace the cd-rom with a cheap DVD drive. That would be approx. $170 + $53 = $223 (which is cheaper than the $289 they want for the DVD-BookPC).

I did see a guy selling BookPC's on eBay a while back that had no cd-roms for about $125.

The bookPC has no serial port. A usb-to-serial adapter may or may not work with a serial shut down controller.

Alright thanx. But does the Book PC with CDrom have a decoder card for DVD or does it need one?

The BookPC doesn't have a decoder card, nor does it have any slots to put one in.

I've found PowerDVD works very well as a software-only player, and works very well at playing Div-x movies as well.

Pop an 80-Gig hard drive in the bookPC, rip your DVD's to to the hard drive, and you have one nice car movie player...

Oh well thats good. I always thought a Decoder card was nessecary. I also didn't know u could rip DVD's like u could CD's to Mp3. Do u rip them to MPEG in the same quality? Also would it hurt to play it straight from the Drive??? And last but not least where can I get a BookPC that cheap?

directron.com has cheap bookPC's. I bought mine off of ebay ages ago (when they first came out). Also try pricewatch.com.

There are other sites out there that show how to rip a DVD to your hard drive. Do a search for 'dvd rip' or something similiar. I've found you can rip a 1-hour DVD straight to your hard drive. This will take up about 4gigs of space. You can then compress this down using DivX, Mpeg4, VCD quality, etc. The choice is up to you. less quality=smaller size.

You said 170 then just add the DVD. I can't find a BookPC for 170 anywhere. Directron is like 190 for a barebones. I want everything but the DVD or CD....?????

help! somone tell me where to get a bookpc for this price! Or any PC that is a decent size that can handle gps and MP3 and has DVD for under 250!! I can't find that bookpc even on ebay for under 250 w/o dvd but not barebones,.
