Question Anyone have good experience with USB->Serial ?

I was thinking of ridding myself of my DOS machine (too bulky) for a book PC... but I'd like to have a GPS and a shutdown module for it...

Since Book PCs don't have slots or serial ports, does anyone have any experience running GPS recievers and shutdown modules through a book pc USB port? From the looks of some posts, the USB converter does not look to be very useful in these situations... :-( just wondering if the tide has turned...

I can't comment on the shutdown module (I don't have one), but I have a BookPC, a usb->serial adapter, and a serial GPS. The USB->Serial looks just like Com1 in Windows, so all of my GPS apps see it just fine except Streets&Trips 2001.

Delorme Earthmate GPS reciever has a USB-> serial adapter for it. It's not like the others since it will power up the GPS too through USB.

It works great..no more batteries, easy hookup.

    Cool

They will work in Windows, but not DOS.

Of course! Thats one of the main reasons for looking at Embedded SBC and book PCs... Dos was fun to play with and I have a working machine, but its casing is too big for my tastes... also, there are no options for using a GPS software in DOS< nor can DOS support any USB device, including an external CDRom drive which I am looking at cuz a normal one can't fit in my dash (darn Ford Taurus DIN shortcomings).

Windows is looking more and more favorable, when before it was not a choice at all.

    ;-P
