Well, I've heard that some people wired a switch to kill their brake lights when the radar detector is set off, so you can slow down to a reasonable speed without the cops seeing your brakes.
^^^ Radar detectors work. I currently have a 2 year old Cobra 9800 (~$80) and a 4 year old Cobra 9200 (~$95). They've saved me from roughly $600 in speeding fines (amount based upon prior ticket amounts ~$80-100 each... yeah I got off easy).
One issue though, is they "false" on automatic doors at your local Krogers, Walmart, etc. Falsing has gone down while going from my 9200 to my 9800 but there are some still there.
Another issue is it can't keep you from being caught while driving stupid. You don't drive 2x the speed limit on a holiday weekend (such as my idiot friend did). Detectors warn you if there are radar/lidar transmitters in the area. If you can't slow down to a reasonable speed before the killzone... what's the point having one?
Back on topic: This is an awesome plan. I was thinking about trying to hook something up where my radar detector runs through my PC and checks against known GPS location falses and doesn't beep if signal = false.
Your guys idea sounds much easier and doesn't require someone to have GPS.
Oh, don't have a V1 but was either going to get an Escort or V1 for myself for xmas.![]()

I want to stay informed of any V1 -> serial/USB circuit =)
Thats another reason to have a manual transmission.Originally Posted by 0l33l

The first is my test circuit (which works), and the second is the application (which also works).
It has been a couple busy months at work, and my power supply blew on my carputer, so I haven't worked on it lately, but I got a usb chip that should be able to do what I need, so I don't think it will take too much more time before the usb part works, once I get some time to work on it.
By USB chip, you mean a serial to USB converter?
BTW: This should be one tight project![]()
That's great, except for when you slam on the brakes and the dude riding your ***, because he's using you as a pace car, happens to be switching song directories on his carputer, talking on his cell phone, and drinking a hot coffee all at the same time.Originally Posted by 0l33l
That being said, I'm excited about this V1 project. I've had mine for about 4 years and it's the best electronics investment I've ever made. It'll be awesome to have it automatically ignore the false positives based on location. --especially if it'll be able to map out the location of the source accurately.

But yeh, too bad about the guy in back, that's why we have minimum insurance laws; you aren't supposed to travel that close to a car. Its the same thing as using engine braking.
