Most of my friends have radar detectors from the U.S, and they work great. I have a friend who will come from the U.S and I'll ask him to bring me one. The sad part is he'll be here in about a year. For now I'll have to stick with my Belltronics one...

US ones wouldn't be much use in the UK - the coppers over here use Truvelo as well as other methods of speed detection which are not traceable with radar detectors (I think they're laser based instead).

Even the best GPS units like the RoadAngel use the GPS to see if the location you are currently at has a GATSO (fixed speed camera) and similar types of fixed camera or whether the area is a 'hotspot' for speed checks by officers at the side of the road. Truvelo and similar speed camera's can only be jammed (there is a 'garage door opening' option available for the Road Angel that just so happens to jam the police roadside speed trap signals) that gives them an error message when 'gunning' you. Position it near your front number plate somewhere as that's where they generally aim the speed gun ).

    HTH for UK folk

Radar detectors are not a 100% solution, they just offer some extra warning in some cases. I'd be surprised if UK cops NEVER used it or laser, they're just too useful, especially when you're on the go or trying to do selective enforcement in a speeder-friendly neighborhood.

The best way to avoid a ticket (other then just not speeding) is to use the Mark I eyeball.

I aslo have a V1 and I think this whole project would be worth the time and money if all it did was make your v1 only go off if you're going above the posted speed limit. Most of the time when I'm getting false alarms it's in a busy side of town so I'm not speeding anyways.

I'm not sure what the conversion would be but here in america the valentine 1 costs just over $400 u.s. sent to your door. Tickets can vary quite a bit from spot to spot but even 5 mph over could easily cost you $150 and thats not including increased insurance costs. My valentine once saved me from a ticket at 20-25 mph over the posted limit. I guess what I'm saying is if you never speed (or do anything else where you might want to Where the pigs are) it might not be worth the money for a valentine, But if you fudge even a little bit every once in a great while the valentine will become a trusted friend.

I don't know, but where I'm from, the V1 is worth 1/2 fine if they catch me doing 180km/h, plus I'd probably never have a license, and ofcourse, the cherry, a criminal record... So I'd say, a radar detector is essential for me. I'd give up my remote mounted detector, if you guys can pull through this V1 thing...
