Make sure you sign up for the Opie and Anthony show too on XM, its an extra 2 bucks a month but WELL worth it.

I don't really get this XM stuff either so I thought I'd show my ignorance...

So buying the XMDirect s really just the guts, it needs something to play through (Head Unit/PC) and somethign to control it (the cable)?

Once we have the XMDirect and the cable it is only any use controlled from a PC right, unless we buy some other controlling device?

Once setup the XMDirect would be at least a semi-permanent install, I'm not going to want to take it in and out of the house, car and office like in the TV commercials? I'm tied to listening where it is installed...?

The antenna - does it need a clear sky view? I would assume it does...

    Chris.

OK, here is the beef on it:
1- you need XM Direct - the heart of XM
2- for car; you need a) HU that is XM ready b) digital interface unit for your specific HU - this has nothing to do with PC, it is strictly for car usage. that is all you need
3- for PC; a) you need an interface cable, either from the link posted above or build your own. b) some SW to control it, Frodo comes to mind, there are other free SW, just search.
4- the antenna needs to be close to window, better if it is facing south, if you live in or near big city, there is ground repeaters so you don't need southern exposure.
5- if you are looking for portability, you could get additional antennas from circuitcity -$29- , one for the car, one for the office. same goes for 12v power source. all you have to do is to just take the unit and cable wherever you go.

You can even power the XMDirect from your computer so it could be pretty portable.

I'm actually thinking about buying a second one just to use in my house since they are pretty cheap.

You can buy the cable from http://www.hybrid-mobile.com

Or you can build your own cable:

so you'd be paying an extra $7? So Sirius and XM are two different companies that offer the same kind of service then?

So you need an interface cable, and then an "XMDirect" reciever? And about how many channels do you get? Sorry for the dumb questions guys, but ya'll have been very helpful so i decided to plaster you with more questions Oh and one more thing...this isn't going to be sending serial data to the PC, right? It's analog sound through like an RCA plug or 1/8" jack? That I can feed into Line In?
CarPC install is starting to come along again...
