    IBM Port Replicator VGA Problem

Well I have an IBM Port Replicator, but when I boot the system it doesn't display antying out of the vga port on the port replicator, but if I undock the laptop and connect the monitor to the vga port on the laptop I get an image. So I docked the machine and pressed Alt+F4 then the Down Arrow (to restart it) then enter. Suddenly just after the machine restarts with the monitor and laptop back on the port replicator I start getting images on the screen. Anyone know whats wrong? it seems like a software issue.

I remember reading about this somewhere in the forum, I believe you need a special utility to resolve this issue. Have you searched?

yep i have searched. Just found out the problem, the laptop isn't sitting properly in the port replicator needs a sligfht push on the left hand side. Now I need to make a bracket for it!

Hey Fox, i am making a very simlar setup to you. I am using an X21 (700mhz) which i have upgraded to 384mb ram in a port replicator also (to easily hack the button and have most connections in). I was going to use my docking port II wich has two extra cardbus slots, dvd drive and pci slot but it needs mains power as i can't face trying to replace the inbuilt psu with dc-dc ones and i am trying to avoid using an inverter for efficiency. How are you connecting your secong hard drives etc and what are you using for sound? I was thinking about using a firewire and USB 2 pcmicia card for second DVD and possibly second hdd (both on firewire) and soundblaster & wifi on USB2 but am concerned about bandwidth so have been looking for an adapter i can use through the cf cardbus slot or maybe using NAS over ethernet for the extra hdd.

Well my external 3.5" HDD is connected via USB to the port replicator.I have a 240AC to 12v and 5v adaptor which I am running off the cars inverter untill I can devise a 12v and 5v regulator using the 7812 and 7805 regulator chips.

The Port Replicator (and laptop) have outputs for sound (round circular thingies) which I will connect my FM transmitter to. A PCMICIA card will be fine for an external hdd. I am only using USB 1.1 right now but I havent tried out full motion video as yet, but I think it will be slow. So if you are planning on viewing video from the external hdd get usb 2.0 or firewire (which you are planning to get). You should have enough bandwidth (correct me people if I'm wrong!)

    [edit]
And my laptop/docking station is powered by a targus auto/air adaptor.
    It cost me $150!!

I tried my laptop with XP and MP10 and i was pretty impressed with the sound quality - even through a tape adapter so an external soundcard may not be needed. I picked up a docking port off ebay for 20 (retail is 350) and was running this off a belkin 300w inverter which easily survives crank but i only have a little 1.6 so want to keep yhe load on my alternator to a minimum (AC and steering noticably effect the engine). The pci card is very useful (e.g. soundcard, graphics, firewire etc) but if the power to the dock is interupted or not on before the laptop resumes from hibernation or standby (got down to 3 secs) then it all goes to pot!

I would never dream of using usb 1 for video off dvd - no chance. Just started a thread asking about cardbus bandwidth and using the CF slot - thought you might be interested.
