12" kiosk 1.3 celeron upgrade troubles

Hey everybody. Got 2 brand new boxed 1.3 celerons to use in my kiosk with lin lin socket 370 adapters and although everything seems to be done correctly (jumpers, bios upgrade, etc) what happens is whenever it tries to load windows it just keeps rebooting over and over. I can get it to load to a drdos prompt but when I try to run a program it reboots by itself, so it is not a windows problem. I have tried both adapters and both processors in this unit to no avail. Original cpu works perfect when I put it back in. In addition I have tried 3 other memory sticks with the same result.

Any kiosk ideas or general troubleshooting ideas would be helpful as I've checked everything I know.

Is there a speaker that can provide POST/beep codes? They may be informational.

doesn't have a speaker built in but Ill try and hook one up if I can. It is posting ok, you can hear it access the hard drive and then it will even bring up the "windows did not load correctly last time....." menu. One of the cpus ran sufficiently enough so that I could run a dos system info/test program. Everything looked ok, cpu tested ok and all the proper values were reported, when I would test the fpu it would reboot instantly. I can't get it to give me the bluescreens instead of rebooting to see if there are error codes.

Everything works with the older 66mhz fsb celeron but not with the 100mhz celeron leading me to think the hardware is having a problem with the switch to 100mhz. I'm going to test the psu and run the chips in my other kiosk to see if I get the same results.

Could be as simple as a corrupt install of the os. --has this system EVER worked?

yes it still works perfectly fine with the original 433 celeron. One of the cpus gets further along than the other. Same result on both machines. Looks like I got 2 bad cpus out of two to me. I don't have a socket 370 board to check the cpus in, I might have to try and find one. Although if the cpus were good they should have worked as they have for dozens of other people with this setup.

my friend had the same exact problem as you. it gradually digressed, first it would get all the way into windows xp, but when he tried to play a tenacious d movie, it would reset itself, and reboot, then it got worse and worse, where it would just reset and 3 seconds later reset. he returned the cpu to the manufacturer, and they replaced it, and now his kiosk is working great. i told him to post a message up later.

    good luck

thank you. The only other time anything similar happened to me was with an old amd KIII 400 processor which went bad and would reboot. They are box processors that were just opened and mfg nov 03 so hopefully they could be replaced. Do you know if your friends cpu was an upgrade or the original 433 chip that came with it? Thanks for the help.

Yeah, it was a bad processor. It was "functional", so I guess it passed enough tests to be shipped out, but I had the exact same problems you are having. I got it replaced and it works now. The only other possibility would be if you hit a trace on the motherboard with the fan clip, which I also did, but then why would the 433 still work? I bought a liquid solder pen and very carefully 'filled in' the traces that I hit and damaged, so try that. Between fixing those and getting a different processor, I got mine to work. Didn't do any memory changes. Good luck, cause this really sucks.

hey Gibsonian, would you mind giving me a little info on the steps you took to get the cpu exchanged? That would probably prove helpful. Did you just call up intel support and let them handle it? I am almost positive it is the chips that are bad. Intels own cpu ID utility is telling me it is running at proper clock and fsb speed. I would have never thought you could buy 2 boxed intel chips and both would be bad. I am still going to try and find a socket 370 board if I can just to make double sure. i have about 5 old socket 7s but never used intel before.

    Hey killadam,
I know your problem. You got hosed just like me I bought some parts form the same person you did, I won't mention names, but you got the processors from a guy who advertised them here and sold them on ebay. I bought an lcd kit from him previously, he swore the lcd was free from defects it was garbage. He buys used or defective equipment and scraps it for parts and resells them. Get in touch with your credit card company and file a claim, other wise you are sol.
If you go the Intel route, one word of caution if you tell them the cpu is brand new they will tell you to exchange it from the place of purchase, also sometimes they will ask for the place you got it from and compare that info to the s/n and lot number on the chip when you call in (they track everything in case of theft), it's just a method to deny claims that might be suspicious.
I got this info from a buddy of mine who's a state trooper and worked with intel after a number of cases of cpu were stolen from a 18 wheeler.
    Good Luck
