Thumbs up This new motherboard should make installing a carputer MUCH simpler.

This integrated Via motherboard has the processor, graphics (with NTSC output for LCDs), NIC, and sound built in. The motherboard is 170mm square, and runs cool enough to be passively cooled (no fan noise). I scrapped my own carputer because I got ripped on my screen and ran out of funds, but just thought I'd throw this out there for anyone that's building a new unit.

Actually, its not all that small. 6.7 x 6.7 compared to the FV24 which is 7 x 7.5 but it does have SPDIF 5.1 audio channels. THey claim that it is more than 40% smaller than any other mainboard form factor currently available on the market. Guess they haven't seen the FV24.

there is one issue if you want to use 5.1 surround sound... It seems that the 5.1 SPDIF connetor is the SAME as the TV-OUT. And you control output via a simple jumper on the mobo.
Bottom line: You cannot have both TV-OUT and 5.1 sound at the same time.

Correct me if I am wrong on this.... but thats what I saw from the mobo specs.

I know the sv24 is about 120$ www.niema.com did a tight little fileserver completly out of plexiglass should check out the hardware he used it would be a good crossover for a mp3box.
On the otherhand for those of us who don't want to spend that much of money i saw this, gateway mobo link, gateway motherboard thats like 30 bucks and can get a 30$ 600celeron to plop in it. I know its gateway mobo but its not very big and still has 2 pci slots for a good soundcard and whatever else you want to put in the other. The only bad thing is the lack of serial ports just video and usb aval. would be interesting to make something out of it thought. I'm thinkin about buyin it for the start of my new box.

Btw, it also has onboard sound and video wouldn't imagine very good though

The only real problem I have with this board is with the audio. It does have SPDIF output, but it's the coax version. I've never seen a piece of car audio hi-fi that uses coax SPDIF.

I bought the "Book PC" because they told me there would be a TOS-LINK module avaiable for it from PC Chips. Got burnt on that. I have a high end DSP (Alpine PHA-H510) and wanted to use it's TOS-LINK inputs for my audio. If anyone know of a SBC that supports TOS-LINK, let me know. Or if there is a coax to TOS-LINK converter out there...

I dont know if this is what you are looking for, but you could try these sites:

www.minidisc.org - there is a construction project page there, one of which is http://www.qsl.net/eb4eqa/spdif_spli...f_splitter.htm

    Hope this helps

Found what I was looking for here. Seems to be exactly what the Skippman ordered.
