    laptop power cotrol. an idea!

if my laptop is running and i close the lid then it goes into sleep/standby/something and comes back about 2 sec after i open it again. set about it with a heavy tool and found a little switch activated by a bit of plastic on the hinge. now if we soldered 2 wires from the switch to a realay, connect the realy to the key, on when key on, off when key off! only q is how much power will it use when 'off'? could shut it down from the screen at night if to much but will still need remote switch to turn it on again..

the most innovative solution I've seen for powering up a laptop involves using a bicycle brake handle and wire. Yes, that's right - a bicycle brake handle and wire. The person who did it hard mounted the handle upside-down in the dirver's side footwell. The wire from the handle was mounted directly over the power button of the laptop and everytime he stepped on the handle, the wire would depress the laptop power button.

Do a search here and you will see what I mean.

When you close the lid on them I'm pretty sure XP just drops the laptop into hibernate mode - so the same amount of power as if putting it into that mode.

If you use the car everyday then I don't think it will be a problem (at least that's my experience).

    Good idea btw

You can set what power mode XP goes into when you shut your laptop. Suspend or Hibernate. I believe if you use hibernate, it doesn't use any power when off. However, suspend requires a low maintenance power to keep certain things running.

I used an IBM docking station for my Thinkpad in the boot and linked wires (to a switch on the dash) across the power button on it. This saved me opening the laptop up as docking stations are cheap and won't matter if you mess it up!

Set up the action in your control panel to start up/shutdown on the power button, works for me!

There is a setting in XP to tell it what to do when you shut the lid of your laptop.

Start -> Control Panel -> Display -> Screen Saver -> Power -> Advanced -> When I close my lid -> whatever

Instead of a switch you could wire up a relay that works off a switched 12v line in your vehicle that would connect/disconnect the leads to the laptop lid switch when you turn your car on or off.

Good idea but I find that If I park up for a few hours the laptop battery goes flat and shuts down you then need to go through the start up procedure again.

With mine i leave the power switch (illuminated) on all day and just switch off at night, sometimes I have even left it on all night with no problems!

my laptop will only come back when it has been continuously attached to power, and I have it on acc power only. I do have wires running from the lid switch and the power switch, and I'll probably hook the power switch up to a relay one of these days.
