Is this possible? Detatch flip out screen...

I want a touch screen, but i dont like how they flip out, it feels too flimsy. So i was wondering if I could get a flip out cd/dvd player, detatch the screen, mount it in my dash with the actual reciever under it. It sounds like a pretty good idea. Let me know. Thanks in advance!

    Heres what im talking abuot..
Taking a flip out touch screen from Pioneer. The Motorized flip out dvd/cd player. Detatch the screen. Mount the screen in the dash, with the par you put the dvd/cd in under it. So it doesnt motorized flip out, its mounted in the dash.

just buy a lilli or a xenarc

or an allbrite if you really want to be cool (and have higher blood pressure)

The screen you are looking at is likely to be expensive, dont know if it has vga either or if it is RCA.

Why rip something apart when there are pleny of screens made for the purpose?

    One of these?
Because if that's the price range you're talking about, it would be easier and cheaper to just get a dirt cheap NTSC LCD to mold into your dash with a home DVD player hooked through an inverter.
But then if you're using a touchscreen you're also talking about using a computer, so why use a standalone DVD player at all?
So, unless I'm misuderstanding you, your idea is a big waste because with a HU like that a large portion of your money is going towards the fold-out feature.
If have a good idea of what you want to do, search around to get ideas on how other people have done their setups. If yours is really different, then post some more info about what you'd like to do and I'm sure you'll get some useful responses.

Well I can find MANY of those flip out ones for around 500, used. Thats not too bad. And it already has a dvd player and stuff with it. But I was just wondering if it was possible to detatch the screen and mount it, and then attatch the wiring back to the actual reciever it was once on.

    very delicatly

possible yes, likely to work no.

the connectors from the boards to the lcd are likely to be like a laptops (very very delicate) and are not likely to survive the change (plus you would have to extend them)

Well then, could I buy a seperate touch screen to go with it and hook it up to that? and just remove the other motorized one?
Is there a cheaper approach to this? Like maybe a cd/dvd reciever and a seperate touch screen? And im assuming that the cd/dvd reciever will come w/ a program to use w/ the screen?

Probably. You'd have to solder the connections and lengthen them, plus find a place to mount the screen where there's still room to reach the HU's controls - or relocate the controls.
Here's another option, if all you want to do is play DVDs: http://cheap.typepad.com/cheapster/2...le_dvd_pl.html and http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...186046-3183212 with a cheap inverter to power it and a cheap amp to power your speakers.
That way you're spending less than $500, because that's with about 5 mins of searching and I'm sure you could get all the parts for less..
