    looking for a keypad

hey all, i am looking for a keypad ignition... thing.

same concept as the one in the movie "the transportor"

i know i have seen them on the internet before, i am looking for a simple one, 10 digits should do it. also i was hoping that it would actually start the car instead of just letting me start it.

if anyone has eard of seen such a thing please drop a line

The only one I've ever seen was custom built by a electronics engineer/programmer for his personal car. However, if you do find one, please post it here as that would be a nice way to start a car.

That would be awesome to have a keypad ignition like that. I wonder what I could make with a matrix keypad and a PIC microcontroller

Wouldn't that make it super easy for someone to hotwire your car?

yup....thats why the one that I posted still uses a key, along WITH the code.

Nothing that someone couldnt hotwire if they really wanted it. The hardest setup to bypass by far is the transponder keys. I can speak only of the Ford keys (PATS keys)....with $15k shop equipment, the manufacturer has a 10 minute delay built in and you then have to program at least 2 keys to start the car. Pretty much impossible to steal. Sinc eit is embedded in the speedo or the PCM, you cant override it.

But I dont think theft is the issue here...I think its the

I got one as standard. Yeah it is cool typing in a code (yeah i do the Transporter "2 passengers, 20kg..." to my mates sometimes) but it is also a pain in the *** when you are used to just jumping in your car and turning the key.

But it does make yor car pretty secure as even if people have the keys they cannot steal your car (just about the only way you can do that bar fingerprint ID which is ot practicle if you want to lend it). Also the system does not rearm if you stall - you need to have the engine off for a certain time or lock the the doors with the engine off.
