In fact, if I could get the same perspex as the amp it would look awesome....
Hey all
I have got the install finished to the stage of the picture attached to this post. I have a problem.
I originally had the car pc with an aluminium lid, and 3 fan holes on, but it didnt look "right". Its hard to explain. However, after taking this picture and looking at it, i like the idea of being able to see the PC components, and hence are considering a perspex/acrylic cover. I have also had the idea of getting a logo, such as my car logo (seat) or a JBL logo engraved onto it. However, I dont want to go cutting fan holes all over the place in it if they are needed. I was hoping to get away with as few fans as possible.
Whats everyones suggestions? The install is nearly finished, just a few small sections of carpet material to put in (in corner of holes) and wiring to be finished. And, of course, this lid problem.
Cheers all, looking forward to your opinions and ideas. I need 1 fan positioned for the carnetix PSU, and probably a fan airflow for the CPU.
In fact, if I could get the same perspex as the amp it would look awesome....
just use 2 small fans ( 3 1/8 or 3 5/8 ) with good CFM. ( at least 25 CFM ). you can get good one that are 48 CFM ( $ 6.00 )
If you need a place to buy them . Go to Ratshack or email me.
one fan pushs air in one side and one pulling air out the other side.
It will cause a air flow .
Make sure the air, flow crosses the CPU .
That is what I do when I install amps under glass.
You could also use a squirrel cage blower ( fan ).
it will make for a low profile set up. If you have room on the side under the rack.
then you will not have to cut in to the glass at all.
Ps. The rack you built is at least 2 1/2" thick . the amp amd carputer and both sunk in there.
If I was doing it.
I would just put a sheet of glass on top of the carputer. Leave the side open under the rack.
And a sheet over the amp.
Then use 4 fans. 2 on each side . Blowing form the carputer side through the amp side out the amp side.
they would be the width of your amp apart. So it blows off the fins of the amp.
Because in that box the amp will get hot.
A cool amp is a happy one.
Then to make it stand out ( glow).
I would in stall 2 small neon light sticks in the rack space.
one top and bottom ( in the rack box ). So it glows and lights up both the amp and the carputer.
If you want to hide it. Just use 2 sideed mirrored glass. it will like like a mirror on with the neon off .
It will show the amp and the Carputer with it on.
Oh, well . I'm sleepy . Sorry about going on and on.
Hey, I forgot to tell you.
That is a nice clean setup.

1 helpful reply out of 3 aint bad i suppose.
From what has been said, just like to say:
Both amp and pc are indeed sunk into floor, however, they have 2 sides that are not blocked off in both cases. I.E, the two ends of the amp are free to get air in/out of easily. In the image both the longer sides of the amp have been blocked (to hold the amp and base up) but both ends are free. With the PC, both top and bottom ends are not blocked too, so was hoping I could get airflow across the mobo from underneath the floor.
I was actually going to put holes in the lid so that the air can come straight in from above, straight to the cpu fan. However, i want to avoid cutting holes into the perspex/plexi-glass if possible.
If you are planing to cool both the amp and PC.
you are going to need 4 small fans. Or 2 HIGH CFM fans. ( good one )
make sure you blow from the left side to the right side.
you blow on the side that will make the least a mount of heat.
and exhaust on the side with the most heat.
you amp are most likely to get hotter.
I would not cut the plexi.
it would look better.
just remember your going to get all theat dust on the fan. Later down the road.
Good job on the box and sub. It look good.
Paul,
One thing I would suggest is to buy a cheap digital cooking thermometer from your local WalMart-type store. They cost about $10USD and are very accurate. Mine are made by Taylor and has a digital readout. You can use this to determine IF you even need a fan, at least for the P1260. If the ambient air in your CarPC area is below 60degC then the P1260 will be fine. This may be a bit hot, though, for your CarPC. I think most of the off-the-shelf mobo/PC stuff is typically rated around 50degC ambient.
Nice looking install!!

Hmmm, thanks for that mike.. I thought the fan was required for the P1260 all the time....
I might just get the perspex cut and ordered with graphics on or whatever, and then work around it as I dont really want to cut holes in the perspex anyway.
Everything else is pretty much done now... just need to cover for the carPC and then get it in!
