    Nano-ITX and 5 1/4" enclosures

    Hi guys,

Nano-ITX is coming, and I've got an install vehicle that could really use it. We have a 2002 Suburban that my wife drives, and she's really leary about a carputer. Our Suburban headunit has a built in CD player and an outboard Cassette player in the dash. The Cassette player is a 5 1/4" device, same size as a CD-ROM drive, etc.

Nano-ITX motherboards are small enough to fit in that size, so I'd like to start planning for making a case small enough to hold an Opus and a motherboard with either an LED or LCD display across the front.

Has anyone else thought or heard about self contained 5.25" computers? Any ideas?

    Regards,

When they come out I plan on making a one din computer with the opus. Also I'm going to try to make docking ports on the back of the unit so I can unplug it with just one big plug. Havn't found a good case so I may just try to make one.

Chairboy, what are you going to do for a screen?

I'm planning an install in my 99 Burb. Phased approach, first get the PC installed (full size ATX) with a boom mounted screen. Get all the bugs worked out and then go for the HU replacement)

    Let's see 8.5W x 2.2H x 5.7D http://www.case-mod.com/store/produc...oducts_id=1157

Or the closest is this I don't think you're going to find on short enough to fit the 5.25 form factor.

Hmm, maybe I should look for a monitor that will fit in the 5.25 enclosure instead... After all, I can hide the PC anywhere...

Not really all that interesting or informative, but here Kevin Rose puts a nano into a mini mac.

Check the comments he's getting from this project. Some hardcore MAC guys sound really ****ed about it. I'm not a MAC guy at all but that is pretty lame to take a brand new Mini-Mac and throw in the slower PC (I would be more understanding if it was a 3GHz or more).
1.6GHz HP e-PC, 768MB RAM, 120GB WD HDD, Slim DVD-ROM, Onboard sound & video, 7" Lilliput, USB GPS Mouse, Audiovox FM Modulator, Vector 400 Watt Power Inverter, Windows XP Pro SP2, iGuidance 2, 15" Samsung LCD for the rear *Carputer not installed*

I don't find it lame at all.

in fact, the branding of the mac turns around the look of it, so it must be a good case, why not use it. if mac people aren't happy, they can take a beige case from the PC world and put their mac in it, I don't mind.

This said, you think that with nano-itx you can have a 2 din monitor (motorized) and computer kit?

    would be pretty darn cool.

Here's one. It's too long to fit into a standard DIN slot, but I believe it'll go into a 5.25" bay provided enough rear clearence. I saw a rack of these in a server case once.
