Bit late in reply, but most USB keyboards don't do that unless there's something special about them. Most USB keyboards and mice plug up and instantly work from bootup, depending upon bios.
So I bring the CarPC in from the car to put it on the workbench. Since the wireless keyboard USB receiver is semi-buried in the car, I figure I'll just plug in my USB keyboard for the computer inside. When I do, the stupid "USB has detected new hardware" dialog pops up and asks if I want to search for drivers automatically or choose them myself.
HELLOOOOOO?! I can't choose them because my KEYBOARD is the device in question and it's not installed yet!
The only way I can think of to fix this is to schlep out to the car with my inside keyboard, plug the wireless receiver back in, start the PC, plug in the inside keyboard, let it install and then shut down and come back in. Of course it's raining and crappy out there, so I don't really want to do that right now.
Is there anyway to make XP default to automatically searching for the drivers?

tr a cheap keyboard wihout a bunch of extra features that require drivers
try a usb to ps2 convertor
Windows problem or not, go to Seattle, beat Bill Gates' ***. You'll feel better.
Use On Screen Keyboard, Win-U, or boot into bios & check that USB Keyboard support by BIOS is enabled....

You expect XP to have drivers for every single device you plug into it, and know exactly what you want? Most USB keyboards you just plug in and XP automatically sets everything up.
