    first freeze, carputer crash-HD noise

Well last night it went to ~3 degrees, and when i started my carputer, it wound up and it was emiting a whine from the HD, it is always on standby so when it turned on it flushed what was left in ram then tried to access the HD, then Crashed, giving me a BLUE screen O death, on an XP machine. i unpluged it and let it warm up and it worked fine after it came to temperature,

the HD is a Maxtor 3.5, with fluid dynamic bering, i have a feeling it was the liquid part, that crapped out on me. just giving a heads up on the reliablity of these drives in the cold temperatures, peace

I had the same problem this morning at ~9 degrees but didn't get any noise, just a general boot failure. After a couple of minutes it booted. It's a laptop drive, I assume it has a fluid bearing.

The BSOD was due to the drive not spinning up to the correct RPMs due to cold. Many drives are using FDBs to reduce noise at normal (room) temps. They have more trouble in the cold then regular bearings.

You got it, this is your problem. For now, during winter, I would recommend total shutdown and manual start of the PC, this way you give it sometime to warm up after you start the car.

Install an inline switch or a relay + switch.

Same here.. got in my car yesterday morning after single digit temperatures all weekend, such an unpleasant noise from the harddrive and disk failure on attempting to boot, I took it inside to warm up, and have yet to test it. I went ahead and ordered another 80gig drive thinking this one was dead, but if it's just a matter of it warming up, I guess I'll be modifying my setup so the harddrive is removable and I'll just take it inside overnight. Any other cold weather tips? This is my 2nd Chicago winter, 1st with a carputer up here.
