    Generic DVD-Rom won't start up...

I've got this generic DVD-Rom drive that I bought for cheap on Ebay. It's an ATAPI with a converter inside that let's you plug it into USB. The drive gets recognized by XP but never mounts. When I look at the Device Manager, it says "This device could not start up".

I've actually gotten it to mount once when I plugged it in with no disk inside, then put a disk in it. Unfortunately, that was a fluke and not repeatable.

The case says it is Model SCD-540 and I Googled around looking for stuff on it but didn't get any good hits. I opened up the case and there was a label over the manufacturer's label. I managed to peel most of it off but can't really tell what kind of drive it is.

I'd appreciate if anyone has any ideas on the type or possible troubleshooting steps?

I googled it too and found some drivers for it. It may be a Matsu****a/Panasonic.

It sounds like using this cdrom in XP may be an issue. I found a few blurbs mentioning that they had problems w/it in XP.

Yours is a different model from what I can tell. I never said I was right either. That would be almost a blanket statement as yours is a slippery slope statement that since yours works so does his.

Now that's a challenge! If all caps is shouting then when I read this do I need to raise my voice for the first letter of each word then tail off as I say the word? I still don't get it, it must be too subtle for me I suppose.

Don't get mad. Seriously. The guy asked for help and I googled and found some links. That's it. Based on what I found I said 'may' which means:

Used to indicate a certain measure of likelihood or possibility: It may rain this afternoon.

...better yet. I give up. Your cd rom works so all cd roms like yours work exactly yours.

I'm digging up an old thread I know, but I have been searching all day for help on this problem, and can't find anything.

I have a similar problem with my DVD/RW drive. I have had this drive installed on my desktop for the last 1 1/2 years, and its worked great, not one problem. So I took it out of the desktop to install my software on my newly built CarPC (I have a VIA MIIk). After loading XM, and most everything else, it worked 100%. So all is well. I turned the computer off for about 2 days while out of town. When I got back last night, i hit the on button on my CarPC (still sitting at my desk as I load music and what not) the DVD drive will not show up. I check all the conections, looked at my Device Manager (it showed up there), but still no drive.

When the BIOS are loading, it shows the drive there as well. But once XP has loaded, nothing!

So I decided to remove the drive from the Device Manager, and try to re-install the drivers, and that didn't work. So after messing around for about 2 more hours, I decided to shut it down and unplug everything, and plug it back in again. Guess what... it worked, everything was fine. So I left it on all night, and came back this morning to see how it was doing. I was going to load a CD to my HD, and the drive was gone again. NOW WHAT

I know a fiar share about computers. I'm not an expert by any means, but I can figure out most anything I need to on them. But this is just killing me.

Has anyone gone through this before, and if so... what can I do to fix it???

Like I said, I have a VIA MIIk board, and the drive is a EMPREX DVDRW. I'm running XP Pro as well.

I'm up for any options, PLEASE HELP!!!
