Put it this way - which would take more work?:
    a) checking every x minutes to see if a package you ordered has come, or
    b) putting a sign up outside that says, "UPS guy - please ring bell"

Scenario 'a' would, of course - and that's what you're doing when you poll. Scenario 'b' is akin to an interrupt.
This is exactly why my home build LIRC receiver doesn't work with Belkin USB2Serial adapter.
The reason? The USB2Serial adapter doesn't support "OnComm" event. It's like "No bell to ring".

Interesting. Thanks for clearing that up.

Update on getting my reciever to work with my Win MCE slim remote.

I downloaded the girder MCE plugin in hopes that in some off chance it will work with my current USB reciever. Well it didn't and there doesn't seem to be any options on the MCE plugin.

It appears that i need the correct reciever... So i am ordering it from newegg for 30 bucks. Man after this i will have two IR recievers and a remote to sell. all bran new.

sorry I'm trying to follow here,

Just wondering what software and drivers you are using for your input, and where I could download a copy?
how about WinLIRC for the driver?
[WinLIRC allows you to transmit and receive standard infrared remote control signals. This allows you to control your computer using almost any standard infrared remote control. It also allows your computer to control other equipment which uses these signals (stereo equipment).]
and uICE to interface it with winamp and assign controls ?

Would that work with this design?
    Thanks!

It could be improper placement of that laughing icon but
It seems you need to read.

I have stated that this reciever works fine. It doesn't work with the remote that i am trying to use which is very compact and cool looking.

    Cheers
